Speedo drive

Anyone know the difference between a speedo drive with the "C" mark and the unmarked one? The one on my 100B+ seized up and grenaded and I have a C mark one available to use until I get a new one.

While I'm here, the original one stuck and wrapped the cable around the wheel. I 'fixed' it and it worked for a hundred miles or so and then did the same to another old but functional cable. I have a new cable and this borrowed 'C' model.

It seems like these drives should be cleaned and lubed to avoid cascade failure. They cost about the same as the cable, which doesn't seem right but I'll take it.

There is a nice description of the maintenance procedure for speedo drives in The Official Hodaka Workshop Manual. I will check my spares, but I'm of the impression that, at least as far as the toaster tank models go, the speedo drives are a constant across all model lines so fitted. I understand that Hodaka out-sourced/job-shopped many of the parts used in the manufacturing process. Everything from iconic parts to nuts and bolts. That might be the situation with the speedo drives. Maybe some shops tagged their parts and others didn't. I guarantee someone in the know will read this and set the record straight. Interesting.

The C model fits 94 Wombats and Toads; looks the same and seems to fit all the wheels. I was trying to avoid bothering Terry Larson at Hodaka Parts for insight. Maybe when I do a post mortem in the morning I can see the difference. Just didn't want another cable to get trashed.

I can't remember for certain, but I think the "C" drive was for 21" front ends. The non-C drive was for 19" inch fronts. ????

Speedo drives need to be geared for specific tire size to be accurate.

The 21" wheel explanation makes sense. So I can use it and just add 10% to the readout.

I also found that the speedo had seized. The drive had a tight spot in the gears as well, so the poor cable was doomed. Good idea to check that the speedo also turns freely before you replace a broken cable.
