Re: Fuel question
I would run mix in the tank until you get the injection system figured out. Others with specific recommendation will surely follow. -------------Clarence
Re: Fuel question
1. Is the oil reservoir tank still mounted on the bike?
2. Have you checked to see IF the oil pump is behind the rear cover on the right side of the motor?
3. Have you tested the oil pump to see if it works?
4. Was the Previous owner using premix?
I would start with those questions & the answers to them! Victor

Re: Fuel question
If the previous owner was running pre-mix there must have been a reason. Figure out why and you'll know if you should or not.

Re: Fuel question
Also, in addition to Victors suggestions, one of the quickest ways to determine if the oil pump is connected is to look at the top of the intake manifold. If there is an oil line routed to the intake manifold (attached with a banjo bolt), then you need to confirm whether the pump is functional. Search the forum and you will find numerous threads describing the process of confirmation of function and adjustment in detail. The official Road Toad owner manual also describes the process very effectively. Score one if you can. A lot of folks distrusted the oil injection system. The first sign of malfunction might be a disastrous seizure so they would remove the oil injection system and run premix. The Mikuni oil pump is actually quite reliable so long as the pump is functional and properly calibrated. I favor a purpose-specific use of oil injection - namely I maintain oil injection on street bikes. I have removed all oil injection systems on my race bikes. They operate almost incessantly in the main jet throttle range so they drink premix only for faultless lubrication.

Re: Fuel question
I’ve restored two Model 99 Road Toads. Both of the motors had the lines from the oil pump to the intake manifold cut. The gentleman I bought them from raced and ran premix exclusively. So, I assumed the pumps either didn’t work, or did not work well enough. I ended up buying Terry’s blocking plate for the tranny and removing the pumps. I’ve saved them, but decided that since the other Hodakas I have all require premix, I would set up all the bikes the same way. One thing about premix is it always runs consistently! Though Matt’s comments are great, I’ve gone the premix route because I know I can always trust premix. Victor

Re: Fuel question
I had an old Jawa with an injection pump and they cleverly had a loop before the manifold fitting that would invariably trap a bubble of air. The air bubble pulsed every time the pump released so you could verify the process.
The hose was somewhat larger than what is on a Toad and may not retain a bubble at higher speed, but the bubble indicator would be easy enough to replicate if you wanted a constant visual indicator.

Clever. That would mitigate my personal biggest concern regarding oil injection - is it working???

Re: Fuel question
High octane (94) ethanol free gas is best for all Hodakas too.
