72 Wombat VM24 SH-83B Carb Help??

Post by Roedaka79 »

Morning ...Roedaka79 new to the Hodaka Form from Michigan.

I am reviving a 72' (94) Wombat 125cc with a VM24 SH-83B Mikuni Carb and I need help?? I just rebuilt the carb and I go to put fuel and it directly pisses out of the bowl opposite side of the vent???
I don't know if this hole is supposed to be plugged or what..but I'm stumped. I added pics of inside and outside of the bowl for possibly pinpoint something else I am might be missing..

There should be no holes to the outside world. You should be able to fill the bowl like a cup and it holds fuel. If not something is missing. I don't have a carb to check so going by experience.

That hole should be plugged. There are several access points to get to internal passages in both the bowl and the carb body. You can plug it up with JB Weld and be good to go. This is an old carb that I have that has this same hole plugged with JB Weld.

You’ll find you can clean up the stainless steel fenders nicely with Bar Keeper’s Friend! I’ve used it on numerous fenders! Here’s a Before & After! :ugeek: Victor

I had a tank seam open up on my VL1500, about 4” long, when I was 600 miles from home. I used JB Weld Steel to fold around the seam and seal it. Rode the bike home and it didn’t leak a drop! Should be fine for the small hole in your carb. Just be careful to not push it too far into the tube. It could change the function of your main jet if you block a good portion of the tube, or even break off and block the main jet. :ugeek: Victor

Pull that pipe off the bike and BBQ it. Remove the heat shield first and then put it directly into a fire! It will burn the carbon and old oil out of the pipe! Then you can clean it & paint it with high heat Ceramic enamel engine paint! And repaint the heat shield silver! Here’s the paint I use below. I get it at O’Riley’s Auto Parts.

Sometimes, the pipe may act like a flame thrower if there is a lot of old oil inside it! Let it stay on until it stops shooting flames. Then hang it up and repaint the pipe! :ugeek: Victor

If you have access to one, an air compressor with an air gun attachment is very effective for blowing all the burned up oil residue and ash out of the pipe so the motor doesn't suck up any of that grunge back into the cylinder during the scavenging cycle.

You’ll find if the pipe is carbon’d up, that it may not even run well, hence the need for the BBQ. And even if it runs fine with the pipe, the rust needs to be addressed. So the BBQ is an easy step to do before cleaning up the rust.

I have a Combat Wombat which had a exhaust pipe with a lot of exterior rust. I BBQ’d the pipe, then I cleaned & removed the rust with Loctite Naval Jelly! Naval Jelly is a great rust removal product!

Here’s a before, an after the Naval Jelly & a final close up of the repainted pipe! :ugeek: Victor
