Denting gas tank

Post by Jrs4jesus »

The triple trees on my recently purchased 73 dirt squirt hits and dents the tank on both sides. I tried another tank and the same happens. The stops on the frame do not show wear. Am I missing something here.

Damaged stop block on frame? Damaged stop nubbins on lower triple clamp? Non-stock triple clamp (and forks)?

My Wombat has a bent RH lower triple tree nubbins. Bent enough that the upper clamp made a dimple in the tank.

The stop blocks and triple tree look good with no wear. I have 2 tanks, one is older and has 1 petcock and silver medallions and the other has stickers in place of the medallions with 2 petcocks. They both fit the same and rub the same on both sides. My mistake it is a 1975 not a 1973. Maybe I have to weld and bring some added stop bumps on the frame. Thanx for your responses.

Could you describe the tanks in a bit more detail. Are they chrome or painted? Small fill hole (~ 2 inches) or large (~3 inches)? The Dirt Squirt tank is slimmer than Ace, Wombat, or Road Toad tanks. Than would possible account for the tank impact at full lock.

Cool. Let us know. It would be hard to imagine the stops being worn down to the point of tank impact unless someone previously ground them off for a trials conversion and ran a peanut tank. They just don't take that much of a beating otherwise. I'm putting my eggs in the "tank too wide" basket.

The only thing is that the chrome tank Dirt Squirt used the same frame, forks and triple clamps as the chrome tank Wombats. So, if it cleared the larger tank on the Wombats, even if the Dirt Squirt had a larger tank, it should clear. The best thing would be for Jrs4jesus to post some pictures.
