Victor’s Ace B Project!

I’ve been working on the Ace B, in between times I was working on the CW or waiting for parts. The top end is pretty much squared away.

Now the bottom end? It was filthy! So much a dirty, greasy, oily mess, that I didn’t even take pictures of it. It was BAD!!!

I cleaned it up today, to get it clean enough to start dis-assembly. Here’s a few pics of the intact cases, before breakdown. I even tried a little Mother’s Aluminum Polish on the inner cases. Victor

Hmmm. Anyone want to buy a good, clean Ace 90 gear box??? LOL!!!

Seriously though, how does one really know? If there were over 17,000 Ace 90’s produced between 1964 & 1967, but the case numbers didnt match the frame numbers, is it just an assumption that any case under 17380 is an Ace 90?

Oh & it looks like Joe is correct. The number is P41039 (see Photo). This is probably the original cases to this Ace B! And I still have 2 more trannies! Victor

It is obvious with the edited picture. Just about 1,000 before the 92 B was produced. Good looking engine Victor, is this a team effort or are you really moving this fast? Looking good! -------------Clarence

Well, it’s Supposed to be a team effort but his dad hasn’t brought him over yet. We will see how it goes.

Realize all I did was clean it. It hasn’t been opened up yet. I’m sure it’s going to need the usual, bearings, bushings & seals, as this motor and another, were given to me by Paul Schwarting for buying this bike from him. So I need to open it up. First I need to get with Terry & order an Ace bottom end rebuild kit. Victor

I was going crazy this afternoon, looking for the pinion gear, pinion bushing & clutch rotor gear from the tranny I’m using for this Ace B. After looking very well through all my parts, I didn’t find it. Then I looked at the pictures from when I first bought the bike & what I got with it.

The tranny I’m using didn’t have these parts on the motor. Fortunately, Paul gave me 2 bottom ends, I’m guessing to make sure I had all the parts I needed to assemble one Ace motor! The picture I have of the parts when I first brought the bike home, confirms it wasn’t there to begin with! St least I know I wasn’t going crazy & stuck the parts somewhere so safe I can’t find them!

The yellow arrow is the tranny I’m using. The red arrow is from where I took these parts. This is the motor which has the seized piston/cylinder that is .080 overbore! Victor

Well my nephew & great nephew came over today and we did a complete tranny overhaul! They arrived about 1:00 pm and we were done by 4:30!

Having that toaster oven makes things go quickly! I still had some trouble getting the bearings in the left side case as it was a bit snug. But reheating the cases made them go a bit better! The right side case stayed in the toaster oven longer & at 350* for about 20 minutes and clink, they just dropped right in! Barely had to even tap them. I’ll remember for next time!

But it was a joy watching a 12 year old listen & do! I explained to him that contrary to popular belief, the tranny wasn’t going to explode apart when opened! (LOL!) we split the cases and I explained what everything was to him and he absorbed it well!

Once the bearings were in place, and the seals installed (by me) we then put the tranny slowly put the tranny together. I had Jordan reconstruct the tranny while I explained what went where. He did a great job & his dad was taking pictures of him putting it together!

Of all the grandsons & nephews I've worked with, Jordan was the first one to try & tackle a tranny opening & closing! And the youngest to boot!

I’ve asked my nephew to forward me the pics he took, and, as soon as I receive them I will post them! Victor

Stripping down frame & almost done! Pulled the top of the triple tree& cleaned it! Fork tubes out!

Can’t loosen the steering nuts, not even with a hammer & drift! So I sprayed with PB Blaster and will let it sit while I go to church & dinner! Painting frame as soon as I can get steering head off!

Moving on with things I can do, while I wait for parts & wiring harness coming from Bruce! Victor

Keep up the great work! You guys are cruising through. Have you tried Heating the steering nuts to break them free? Maybe a monkey wrench, they might not survive it but it’s worked for me in the past. Either way good luck and thanks for the consistent updates, it’s great watching a project unfold.

Also, is this the ACE that had the overlay sprocket carrier on it? If so, any chance you could post or DM a few photos? I’m still interested in seeing if it’s something I can fabricate or if it’s gonna be easier to find one. Last time i called Bruce he was out.

No it’s the other one, the Ace B+ which has the overlay. I’m not home right now so I’ll post you a pic of that wheel tomorrow!

For now I’ve really sprayed it down with PB Blaster. I’ll let it sit over night & then try something with heat leverage! I’m sure that will do the trick! Victor

The model 92 Ace 100 definitely came with an overlay sprocket. The parts listings for both the 92B and the 92B+ list an overlay sprocket. I can not vouch for the B but I know that my B+ came from the factory with a single large sprocket and I never saw a new B+ with an overlay. Perhaps the very early ones did?

I own a 71 and 72 B+ and both have the overlay sprockets.

A little more work done today! First coat of Rustoleum Safety Red on the frame & one side of chain guard! Victor

I was able to remove the steering nuts with a basin wrench I have! Kind of like a pipe wrench that slips on and tightens as you turn it! That and the great application of PB Blaster which day over night!

When I got it loose, the frame fell backwards end over end, throwing steering bearings everywhere!!! Fortunately, I have extra bearings in both sizes. I found 15 of the smaller and 21 of the larger. Victor

So FYI you only have to find, --10 of the small ones and 2 of the large one, good challenge for the kids, give a prize for the first whom finds all. HA HA, anyone whom has down old vintage forks on bicycles and motorcycles, have done the very same thing, don,t hang your head to low, and as a good practic, put a strap from garage ceiling rafters to frame and it will never fall. HA HA also a thing that has happened to us all. Replacement bearing balls are cheap. Good Job victor. Bruce
