Shifter Cases

Post by viclioce »

I have 2 shifter cases. Both say Ace 100 on the magneto cover, but one shifts 1 up 3 down & the other shifts 1 down 4 up.

The one which shifts 1 down 4 up also is a damaged case with rough alumawelding on it.

Can I swap out the internal shifter mechanics and move the 1 down 4 up to the case which has the 1 up 3 down shifter components to make the undamaged case shift all 5 gears? I can’t remember. Thanks! :ugeek: Victor

Victor, it looks like someone has played with those covers. I would pick which one you want to use and start all over again with proper inside pieces and etc. I might also suggest you contact Greg Watkins in Arz., whom rebuilds a lot of side cases, he is an expert on this one. Good luck. Give him a call 1==626--324--0303 Bruce

I wonder if a re-review of the direction of shifting might be needed on the 5 speed shifter case. To my knowledge there are no ACE 100 shifter cases which shift down for 1st. And modifying one to do that would involve a thousand dollar(+) budget, with considerable tig welding and expert machinist time. Might want to double check that one.

On the other shifter case, we probably need Clarence to weigh in, but I don't think there were ever any 4-speed shifters made with ACE 100 molded into the cover. Have I got that right Clarence? However, it might (easily?) be possible to install 4 speed ACE 90 internal parts to convert an ACE 100 "up for 1st" five speed case into a functioning "up for 1st" four speed case to be used on an ACE 90.

You can convert The ACE 90 cover to 5 speed and ACE 100 to a 4 speed by changing out the Foot Change Ratchet. 1 down 4 up takes a the Cover that came out in 1972 on the Model 94 Wombat. Otherwise, Hodaka would have used the ACE 100 cover casting with different parts. I`m sure they could have but as we know they didn`t. Joe.

So are the Ace 100 covers all supposed to be 1 down 4 up? I’m not following this completely. This tranny has 5 gears. But the shifter is moving 1 up 3 down. I count the notches in the other shifter ratchet and one has a notch for 1, N, 2, 3, 4 & 5.

I need to pull the ratchet out of the one shifting 1 up 3 down, but why would a tranny with 5 gears have a 4 gear ratchet? Doesn’t make sense to me. And this is an Ace B tranny. So if I have to use the shifter cover with the 5 gear ratchet, I’ll grind downs the weld job so it doesn’t look as bad. Just would prefer to use the undamaged shifter cover.

So, Ed, are you saying I need a shifter cover with Hodaka on the magneto cover portion? I thought only the Ace 90 magneto cover said Ace 90 and said Hodaka on the shifter window cover, if I called the pieces by the right name? :ugeek: Victor

I look at the part numbers and ALL the Ace 100 covers are 922001. Only the 90 has a different shifter/magneto cover part number with 902001.

How do you know which Ace 100 covers are 5 speed vs which are 4 speed if the covers all have the same part number? My Ace B+ has a 1 down 4 up shifter.... :ugeek: Victor

Take a breath and maybe a sip of Cabernet or a nice citrus note IPA. (slow down, you'll go faster - re-read previous post).

Only Wombat (model 94) and later shifter covers have Hodaka molded into the cover. Prior to that there were shifter covers with ACE 90 or ACE 100 molded into them. Shifter covers with "HODAKA" molded into the large circular area are the ONLY ones which are "down for 1st, up for 2 thru 5.

NOTE: Do not let clutch covers even come into your thinking on this topic. We are talking ONLY about shift covers.

So, ALL "ACE 100" shifter covers are "up for 1st, down for 2 thru 5". ALL "ACE 100" shifter covers came from the factory with that shift pattern (up for 1st - with 5 speeds).

NOTE: A "DPO" (Dreaded Previous Owner) could have modified an "ACE 100" shifter cover by installing internal components from a 4-speed ACE 90 in order make himself a working replacement for the ACE 90 shifter cover he broke on a rock. That would have worked fine for him. But when that "Ace 90" configured (4 speed) shifter case (with ACE 100 molded into the circle) later got sold when the orginal bike got parted out . . . who knows where it went . . . or how it got on the bike you now have . . . but it won't work on your 5 speed transmission. (now if you had a 4 speed Ace 90 . . . it would work there) Aaaaaannnnd, if you install the proper Ace 100 internals in your shifter cover with ACE 100 molded into the circle, it will work with your Ace 100 transmission. But it will "up for 1st". Period.

I'll have to disagree with Joe - if Hodaka could have used the ACE 100 shifter cover with different internals to achieve "down for 1st" shifting . . . I think they would have. They had to create a new case with the shifter arm on the "other" side of the control shaft (and I'd bet they were bitchin' about it the whole time). Who the heck was the world and why oh why was the world telling the Brits and the Japanese to change their shift pattern??

OK. So I have a 5 speed tranny & 2 Ace 4 speed shifter covers. End of confusion! My Ace B+ has a shifter cover which says HODAKA on the magneto portion. I guess this was a Mod that Paul made on his Ace 100’s & he just used the same Model 94(A?) shift cover and swapped trannies around! Took a while but I got to the bottom of it. Didn’t think he would give me a tranny with 5 gears in it & a 4 speed shifter cover! I’m learning!

I emailed Bruce and asked him if he has a 94 or 94A shifter cover so I can use all 5 gears! :ugeek:?Victor

The ace 90 shift cover can be used on a 5 speed, they made a shift change ratchet just for that, in the five speed kit. ------------Clarence

Clarence, can you recall the components of the five speed kit you mentioned? I imagine it is more involved than simply trading out the 4- for the 5-speed ratchet.

Well, I’m waiting to hear from Bruce tomorrow. Asked for a Model 94 or 94A shifter cover. I want him to learn on a standardized pattern. Nuff said. :ugeek: Victor
