Another 1-down, 4 up shift case question

Post by Al Harpster »

Can the group tell me what Models had this shift cover that'll fit an Ace?

Having trouble identifying what I need.

Thanks again.

It’s the one with Hodaka embossed on the magneto cover. The others have Ace on them.

Started with the Ace 100b+ I believe. Maybe as an option or standard. Not sure. 94/94A/95 Wombats and later for sure. All chrome tank super rats were 1 up 4 down. The 1down/4 up came available during the 93B and Ace100B+ run, for the Wombats so it’s possible some of them got the better shifter.

All one piece 5-speed shift covers are interchangeable. So if you wanted a 1up/4down on your wombat, you could... good theft prevention. ;-)

Thanks for the information.

I tried ordering the shift cover I need from Hodaka Parts Missouri. No luck. Also no luck Hodaka Parts Idaho.

If anyone has one they'd part with I'm willing to buy one in "fair to maybe good" condition. Or better.

My email address is on file at this chat group.

I thought all 5 speed transmissions were the same shift pattern except the ace 91 parts? Am I wrong?? ---------------Clarence

All the Hodaka 5-speed transmissions are the "same" in the following ways:
1. Control shaft position for 1st gear is all the way "out"
2. Control shaft position for neutral is "half-a-step" "in" from all the way out
3. Control shaft position for 5th gear is all the way "in"

So, all the Hodaka shift covers provide for indexing the control shaft to the same (exact) places. The nifty thing is . . . if the shift cover has ACE 100 molded into it, it will index to 1st gear by lifting up on the shift lever ("up-for-first, down-for-the-rest"). However, if the shift cover has HODAKA molded into it, it will index for 1st gear by pressing down on the shift lever ("down-for-first, up-for-the-rest").

So it can generally be said that a Hodaka transmission is just a Hodaka transmission . . . and the shifting pattern resides in the shift cover.

I'd very much like to know how the internal shape of the shift cover casting makes the sector mechanism go in Reverse order.

Perhaps I could modify my Ace case to have what a Hodaka case has.

What's my motivation? I can't seem to get my hands on the Hodaka case.

I'm willing to experiment.

You will be just shy of a "Manhattan Project" to modify an ACE shifter case from "up-for-first" to the later "down-for-first" shift pattern. It will require TIG welding and machining and . . .

Keep searching for a "HODAKA" (down-for-first) shifter cover.

"Manhattan Project" - funny. So Captain, in other words, is it correct to say the Hodaka shift cover will fit to all toaster tank Hodies with 5-speed transmissions? Also, could a Hodaka shift cover be operable on an Ace 90 with/without modification?

Matt, The “HODAKA” shift cover will fit any 5-speed transmission. It will not work on an Ace 90 because they are 4-speed transmissions.

You could convert an Ace 90 to 5-speed with a little machining, and then you can use a 5-speed cover or covert the Ace 90 cover to a 5-speed, again with a little machine work, but it will be the 1up/4down variety.

I have a converted Ace90 5-speed shift cover on my Sleeper Ace.

I have a “Hodaka” shift cover I am willing to part with. I needs some work but very fixable. I think most if not all the parts are there. I is broken in the usual place on top. I can bring it to Hodaka days.

Thanks Roger. I figured there would need to be some type on modification on the Hodaka cover to operate the four speed gear box. I like Clarence's move. I've seen the ads for the M90 replacement racing transmission. I'd like to have a big 'ol pile of those sitting on a shelf down in the shed.

Bert44: thanks for the referral to the eBay offering.

I've looked that over, but the condition vs. price mix doesn't look right for me.

But I appreciate your help.

This shift pattern thing is my next Hodaka-Obsession project. I'll keep at it.

Al I would take Tether up on his offer, its a start, for a project. It has all the parts nec., as well just have to put together, If for any reason you need the internal items or pieces when you start the conversion, I have many of these inside parts, keep that in mind, and for you the price will be right. We just don,t have any covers at this time that say "HODAKA" I have two that say ACE 100 but no Hodaka. Please enjoy Hodaka Days and keep us in mind for any other needs you might have. Bruce Young
