New member: 75 Road Toad questions

Just got a Toad recently. Trouble shooting the electrics and I’m looking for a wiring diagram. Right now, nothing works. Main fuse is good and I’m about to dive into it with my meter. Anyone have a diagram out there?

Thank you much. I’ve always liked the Road Toads and one popped up at the right time to pull the trigger on it.

So far, the battery is dead and I’m only gettin 5VDC from the rectifier at idle with battery disconnected.

OK. Are you getting ANY lights?

Is your AC/DC switch on the lower left of the headlight bucket in the AC position?

Are you aware that the lights only function when the motor is running?

There is a long light green wire which runs from the headlight bucket all the way back to the battery. Make sure this wire hasn’t gotten smashed behind the top air cleaner mounting bracket. Smashing it, even if the copper wire doesn’t show through, can cause the headlight to not light up.

Also have you tested the headlamp by connecting it directly to a 6 volt power source? Either a good battery or a 6volt Charger which will put out enough voltage to light the lamp?

The turn signals need all the lamps functional to work, including the indicator lamp on the “dash!”

I’ve restored 2 Model 99 1975 Road Toads! Let me know what works with direct power and which don’t. This is the first thing to do when trouble shooting Toad electrics! Victor

For an inexpensive battery you can get 6 volt rechargeable tool batteries at Home Depot or Lowe’s for less than $12 I believe. Victor

I went and purchased a new battery for a mere $23. It’s now charging. I do have a light green with a male bullet connector disconnected under the seat. According to the drawing ddvorak linked to, it goes to the neutral switch to light up the idiot light. Is that not correct? I also have unused B+ female connectors. I know I need two for the brake light, which has the switches removed on both front and rear. I’ve linked to the picture below.

There are 2 connectors with that color. One is for the neutral light the other is for the power to the headlight! The wiring diagram lists the power wire for the headlight as Green and the wire for the neutral indicator as light green. I should have been more specific. Mine was faded so I assumed it to be light green as well. .

I zoomed in on the wiring diagram attached. There is a green wire coming off the AC/DC switch with 2 connections. One goes to the light switch assembly on the left side handlebar. The other is long & connects to the green wire on the ignition switch. Victor

Thanks for the help. I’m back feeding now, but all lights are working. My neutral indicator light is on, most likely because I powered the Lt. green wire. I’m going to borrow the stop switch off my Norton to get a brake light. Then I can get it licensed. I cleaned up the drawing last night that you linked me to. It’s a bit easier to read, at least for me.

What is the emergency AC/DC switch for?

Nevermind, I figured it out. Runs the tail light off rectified power or the alternator. Seems odd to me.
