Repairing Kickstand Mount???

Post by viclioce »

My 03 Wombat kickstand Mount has 2 cracks in it which run from edge to hole. The mount won’t support the bike any more. It is sitting in the garage atop a milk crate.

Has anyone successfully repaired the mount? I messaged Bruce to see if he had a bad frame with a mount he could cut off and the answer was nope.

I’ve though about using the notching technique where you cut “V” notches at the cracks and then fill the notches with weld, and then grind it smooth. This is a tough piece to try and weld and I only gave a wire feed welder.

I’m open to suggestions. A friend previously tried welding a washer to cover it, not realizing the kickstand wouldn’t fit back over it. Then he had to grind all the welds off to remove the washer.

I’ve also considered trying to find a piece of steel stock, bending, cutting & drilling to make a new mount, but I do not have the tools or the fab’ing experience to tackle this on my own. It would be great if I could find someone with a mangled frame who could cut the mount off and send it to me. But I’m open to suggestions. Thanks! :ugeek: Victor

Is the bracket the same as your Combat Wombat? I bought a 93A Frame that it had been cut off and made one for it. It`s a 2 piece bracket. The flat part with the hole is welded to another part . That gets welded to the frame. Let us know! I know a guy that just sold a Condenser for a Model 94 that has one. Joe.

I'd go ahead and try to repair it myself. If it doesn't work, then you can switch it out.

To remove that bracket the quickest way is to cut off the flat part and grind off the rest. I repair rather than replace. Why? The more you do, the more you learn! You can make a template (pattern) of the flat part of the bracket. Then copy it and weld it on. That`s what I did and I had a bracket. BUT it was a bare frame. Still, you need the tools and equipment to do the job. Joe.

Joe. You have email!!!

I will try cutting it off so I can stabilize it in my vice. Then I will attempt a repair. Not sure if my wire feed welder will do the job well enough, but it can’t hurt to try.

Cutting “V” notches atcthe cracks with my grinder & then filling the notches & grinding it smooth is the only way I can figure to do it so that the kickstand will still go back on. Guess We’ll see! :ugeek: Bictor

If possible, try to grind all the way through the crack so when you weld it,s 100% weld with no left under the weld. If you can get to it you after welding you could grind the other side to your weld and weld it to ensure it,s 100%. A cut off wheel on a dremmel tool works good for veeing out small cracks.
If you are worried about your wire feed not welding hot enough you could pre- heat the bracket with a propane torch.

Thanks for the tips, Mac! I’ll give it a go. I do have a propane torch so I can do the heat up before the wire feed weld! :ugeek: Victor

their's usually a chart on the inside cover of your welder, were you would put a new roll of wire on, that will give you a setting for thickness of metal your welding on that would help also......albert
