Super Rat Frame Number

Post by djdesantis »

I have come across a Rat with Frame # B-41986 and engine # P 25496 with a spare engine of P 30278. Frame head tube plate is 1970. In looking at the production number chart this frame number is not listed. Any ideas as to why?

What about this chart, where does it fit? What Model # is it going to be?

Yes it is not in range. The first group of super rats in 1969 began with 37205 and ended with 40004 and then the next batch began with 45263. The book chart is in error it would be nice if it could be corrected. I have always been aware of this and I would guess that others could be aware of it too. ---------------Clarence

Looks like the P motor makes the engine an Ace & not a Rat. But, it could be someone damaged the case(s) and transferred the Rat tranny components into it out of necessity. The cylinder, head, gears and side cases are all interchangeable. The only way to know for sure is splitting the tranny & checking the gears. :ugeek: Victor

Yes it would be part of the first batch produced. I sold allot of Super Rats in this number range at least 10, here in Kalispell, Montana. I threw out most of my records, the biggest number that I sold in this range was 41884, from the few records I still have. I feel if the chart is corrected make all the corrections needed at once, It would take allot of effort, involved members ect. Is it worth it? 95 + percent of the chart is correct my opinion. ---------- Clarence

The gears and the main shaft 924500 are the same. The primary gear and the clutch are different. A P engine is not a Rat motor.-----------Clarence

Right. But if you busted a case, you could move all the Rat tranny parts into a set of P cases, right? Or wrong? I haven’t touched a Rat case but was under the impression they were virtually the same excepting the engine number? Let me know for the sake of accuracy. :ugeek: Victor

The cases are basically the same. The only real difference was the Super Rat had needle bearings in the case for the transmission main shaft and countershaft, where the Ace had bushings. And the serial numbers were different.
