Dirt squirt exhaust question

Do i use the U shape braket bolt to mount onto the frame braket sticking off? Can someone clear this up for me or post a picture example to make sure i do it correctly. Also another question i have is where do i put the exhaust springs to ? My hodaka motor has no holes in the fins to place it anywhere so im confused on what to do. Is it Ok to attach the springs from exhaust to somewhere else?

Hi Rylan. Great to see you back on the job. It is always very exciting to hear a bike you've been working on fire for the first time. Just a few thoughts that might help you get your exhaust system mounted properly. The exhaust springs that hold the pipe to the exhaust spigot on the cylinder have to be mounted to the fins on the cylinder. Look very carefully on the fins on either side of the exhaust mounting spigot on the front of the cylinder. The holes are small and hard to see on the black fins but they should be there. They may be full of dirt/grease so probe around a bit or wash the fins with a bit of solvent and a bristle brush. Stuff a clean rag into the spigot first so you don't drop any crud into the cylinder. If there are no holes present, your bike might have an Ace 100 cylinder which is otherwise the same as the Dirt Squirt cylinder. By comparison, the Ace pipe is mounted to a threaded spigot with a nut on the pipe. If there are absolutely no holes there, then you will have to drill them. If that's the case, let me know and I will give you precise instructions and measurements to guide the drilling process. If the holes are present, then there are two springs used to fasten the pipe - one on either side of the spigot. The springs attach from the fins to the corresponding loops welded to either side of the pipe header. Now, on the picture you included with your post, the first thing you need to realize is that the upper pipe hanger (the angled, bare metal bracket just behind the upper pipe mounting tab on your pipe) is properly positioned on the OUTSIDE of the tab. In other words, the tab on the pipe goes behind (on the inside) of the hanger. This is opposed to the way the hardware is aligned in your photograph. If you look carefully, you can see a shadow in the grunge on the upper mounting tab outlining the position of the hanger on the upper tab. In proper mounting order, the bolt passes through the hole on the hanger then into the threaded hole on the upper mounting tab. Use a spring washer between the bolt and the hanger or the bolt can vibrate loose. The lower mounting tab on the pipe attaches to a u-bolt attached to the right/rear frame tube using a nut and spring washer. If the u-bolt is not there, let me know. It may be rotated out of position so take a good look. Another piece of advice is to assemble all of the mounting hardware before tightening any of it. There is always a bit of fiddling required to get everything in position and lined up. This task is easier with the mounting points loose during the assembly process.

Good call. I'm posting pictures now. One other bit of advice is that it is always helpful to clean the bike really well before working on it. A clean bike is always much easier and more satisfying to work on. There will be plenty of opportunities to get it dirty again.

Just to provide some confusion, I have a NOS (New Old Stock) iron 100cc cylinder down in the Hodaka mine (basement) . . . and it has ONE hole in the top fin (directly centered over the exhaust port) where a single exhaust retention spring could be hooked. I didn't expect that. Thought it would be good to let you know about that possibility.

Hey Rylan, I was taking another look at your photograph and noticed something you should attend to. You need a proper spark plug cap on your high tension lead (aka spark plug wire). They seal the contact from water, shorting, and arching. Also, if you touch that bare contact while the bike is running, you will receive a nasty surprise you won't soon forget in the form of an AC high voltage shock that will transport you into next Wednesday. New caps are very simple to install. The contact in the cap is threaded so all you need to do is freshen the end of the spark plug wire by sharply cutting off say a half inch or so and screwing on the new cap. If you can't get a hold of one, let me know. I have a bunch and would be happy to send you one.

Thank you Matt! I will let yall know my progress soon after some more work. I do have 3 other exhaust for this bike. If the mounting holes do not work correctly like captain suggested. The one in the picture will probabaly be my best bet tho because its in the best shape.

Great Rylan. All you will need to fabricate are some hanging straps to secure the pipe to the mounting point. Bar stock (cheap at any hardware store), a vice, a hammer, a file, and about 20 minutes are all you will need.

Perfect Rylan! Great work. Is that the same pipe as in the other pictures? Maybe the tabs didn't look like they lined up in that other picture because the header was not fully inserted into the exhaust spigot. Optical illusion stuff.

It took me a bit to figure out what "lmk" means . My kids use these types of abbreviations and acronyms all the time. I've finally figured out that they do this so they can communicate freely and likely smack-talk me right in front of my face. Here's an example:

What I hear:

What was actually said:

Kid A: Wow, Dad is really old and uncool. I mean, who listens to Black Sabbath?

Anyway, yes, those are the filters I use, Rylan. They flow well with premix and are low-profile. I will take a look for a petcock today.
