Next Project in the Hopper?

Post by viclioce »

I’m almost done with the Green Toad. Just need to finish the brake work & figure out the lighting issues. Since I’ve been there before, I’m notcto worried about the lights.

Now for the big questions in my mind. Start on the Ace B? Don’t know if my nephew is ready to commit or has to await for school to be done. Guess a phone call is in order. Hmmm. So if the nephew isn’t ready, the decision would be to start the Combat Wombat!

I’ve already put about $385 in my shopping cart at Hodaka-Parts. If I don’t start the Ace, then I’ll push the button on all those parts! If I start the Ace, I’ll have to save all the items in the cart for the future, so I don’t forget the list!

But if I start the Combat, I can likely finish it in about 2 months & then be ready to start the Ace with the nephew. See where I’m going with this???

Here’s a few photos. I also have a seat pan & the chrome exhaust which I bought from Bruce, and probably other parts in a box I’m forgetting about, along with 1 set of side covers. Also have at least one more clutch, and a mostly complete 3rd bottom end.

Input for guidance would be greatly appreciated! :ugeek: Victor

Looks like a nice starting point, but as I found out on my Ace, the DPO can cause the estimated repair bill to be a lot more than expected.
I would do the CW now and save the Ace for your nephews summer break. Just don,t do what I do which is to get two or three going at once and then take forever to finish any of them lol.

well working with my grandson who is 10, ive found that during school he does not have a lot of time to work on our project. i have to get organised so when he does get the time we dont waste it monkeying around. in my mind if you start the ace B you will have a lot of down time if you want him to be involved, so go for both at one time the combat wombat would be your main project and you can carve out some time for your nephew once a week or every 2 weeks then when schools out the combat wombat will be done and you will have a head start on the ace and you two will have more time for riding during the summer than if you wait till schools out. well thats my 2 cents for what its worth.... albert

Clarence, I got a chrome pipe Model B from Paul Schwarting, again! Looks like I got just about the last of what he had left, except a few random frames. A RT Frame, a 94-94a Frame (didn’t check it closely), an older Ace 90 which he wants to keep & either a Blue Super Rat or Super Combat Frame. I didn’t ask him which one it was!

It’s a 1970 so it’s a later B but not a B+. I’ll attach a pic with the VIN tag & you can tell me! :ugeek: Victor

Mac. At least I’m starting from a better point this time. I have a total of 4 bottom ends, 2 cylinders and one good head to choose from. I’ll pull what looks to be the most complete one apart, check the clutch for wear, and send the best cylinder to Terry & Hodaka Dave for a piston bore & setup, so everything works together. I’m also going to order 2 kickshaft bearing retainers, the heavy duty ones, from California Hodaka. They look mighty sturdy! But I’ll check Terry’s offerings too! I think I need a new one for my grandson’s Ace B+ as well, and may as well put inevin this B right away.

Ahhhh, the joys of having to decide! :ugeek: Victor

Albert, I know what you mean! My middle grandson stopped asking me to work on his Geeen Toad, so I built the Red Toad for my nephew, his cousin. Then he started asking me about when we were going to finish his & I told him it seemed like you lost interest. That got his attention.

But he’s a busy kid too! He’s in band (the one I volunteer with) and also in HOSA, which is a medical profile group in high school. He wants to be a doctor and has stuck with that decision since he was 6 years old! He has been involved in early medical training since the 5th grade and does really great with it $ enjoys it. He can get his license but hasn’t yet. He says no rush. But his older brother graduates this year and his younger brother starts high school next year, so guess who will be driving them to school??? He got a VW big for his 16th birthday which he is also supposed to be restoring with his dad, who’s an auto mechanic. Busy busy!!! :ugeek: Victor

Made about in May1970. Your owner handbook and illustrated parts list would be 929510B in the upper right corner. It would be bright red. --------------Clarence

Clarence. I don’t have the owner handbook for it. I also didn’t have a seat pan for it, or a “B” exhaust.

It does have 4 things as described by Paul in his video. A June 1970 VIN tag, the high rise bars with the cross member, the smaller speedo & the larger top fork nuts, as shown in the picture.

And I have an Ace B pipe which I got from Bruce. However, in the video the early pipes are described as being straight, black & having a plated shield. However the pipe I received is all chromed.

However, the chrome is not in good shape. Could it be the D.P.O. Chromed this pipe when it was originally black? I’m attaching a not too good photo of the pipe to show you. But if it’s not supposed to be chrome, I’d rather sand it really well and paint it black with high heat engine paint, if that’s the way it’s supposed to be? I do have the plated shield for it and it cleaned up nicely! Let me know folks! :ugeek: Victor

Victor the ace 100 had the pipe you have. The early ace 100 B had the same pipe just painted black with the chrome cover. However 100B is not the model number. ----Clarence

OK that’s good news. I can take my orbital sander to it and clean it up really well and paint it black instead of paying $300 to havevit re-chromed! :ugeek: Victor
