Hodaka 125 super combat

Post by skydoc2 »

Looking for a 125 super combat in fair to excellent condition. I saw an ad for one on smart cycle guide but could not get in touch with the person who lives in Tarzana California. Any help would be appreciated.

There was a follower on the Hodaka Fan Club Facebook page who had one for sale. Not sure if it’s still available, but worth checking/asking. :ugeek: Victor

Just a casual observation here, but has anyone else noticed that when you encounter a Hodaka for sale on fleabay, there is usually an insanely high price tag attached. You can also (typically) plan on sorting out myriad DPO issues, performing a complete engine teardown, and incurring skys-the-limit expense as you go about hunting down correct parts, etc. just to end up with a serviceable machine. Alternatively, when you purchase a bike from a real Hodaka person, the price is great, the bike is as advertised, and there is post-sale support readily available. It just goes to show that the family that makes up our Hodaka community really do it for the love of the brand. Example: From Hodaka Dave, I purchased a completely overhauled B+ with new 1st overbore and new piston, buddy seat and pegs, and TITLE for $2,500 delivered. The bike runs perfectly and all operating systems work as designed. Amazing! I'm as sure as I can be that if you buy a "race-ready" Super Combat from Greg and Diane Watkins, you can put that bike through a few jetting runs, take it to the track, and race it. These folks really support our enjoyment of the brand and I'm happy to do the same for them.

I didn't realize Hodaka Dave sold bikes I thought he only restored them for customers that already had the bike. Is there anyone else you would suggest that could have a super combat?

Thank you, Kelly. We really have a unique situation here with Hodaka. Especially when you consider the problems many folks have in trying to maintain other brands with utterly unavailable or astronomically expensive parts. I attribute this to the original concept of engineering fun into the bike designs. That feature is timelessly desirable.

Sky, you are correct in that I don't think Hodaka Dave is a bike dealer at this time. I anticipate that he will continue to work privately and with Terry at HPI performing restoration and major engine work, but as HPI evolves, it is not unimaginable that he will join forces with HPI to return some of the many restorable bikes in their inventory to service and thence, to the market place in their "used bike" department. Time will tell as the used bike division of HPI comes on line. You might contact HPI to inquire if they currently have any Super Combat baskets in their inventory.

I agree Matt. Some people find a Hodaka to “flip” and see bikes like the two above SC and think “hey, mines worth that because it,s a Hodaka”without realizing what it takes to build one to that level. I know Icould spend a bunch of money building one and it still won’t be in the same league as one of Greg’s or Dave’s bikes.
This one does make me want to part with a bunch of money !

Uh...mmm...yep, that one would run you some serious bread. Just at first glance - 03 front end, chrome plated HT2 pipe, alloy swing arm (Webco?), gas shocks (Ohlins?), primo Clarke MX tank, CNC machined custom drive sprocket. There's probably an additional 5 grand of trick yumminess on that scooter. I'm a bit surprised the grass around it isn't a bit greener from all the saliva raining down. Its next door neighbor looks sweet too. Amazing bike. Who built it?

Steve Mitchell build, he was a regular at Hodaka Days for many years. Each year he would have a different bike as good as this black one.

Wow Kelly, that guy knows how to put a works bike together. I wonder what's under the hood? Was the core a late model SC/SR? Thanks for the back story, Kelly.

Here is a couple more of Steve's builds, he was the first guy I seen use the front fenders for the back and using other brands. The orange bike has Husky 125 fenders. Steve also made or had made his own parts like gas caps, rear brake pedals and the cool stuff.

If you zoom in on the Black bike, you can see the gas cap, foot lever and he was the first one to make that exhaust manifold. The swing arm was a Karl Landers, and you can see the Husky rear fender on that bike also.

Those are nice! I have seen the KLP swing arms and tanks on other bikes and they are works of art. Is Steve Mitchell the one who built the “Out Law “ Hodaka trials bike that I,ve seen pics of ?
