03 Wombat

Post by Strathbike »

Hi need some help . About to have our first competitive multiday Vinduro here in Aus . I've entered my Combat special , which is fitted with 03/Thunderdog forks/triple clamps /wheel . Problem I have is class V1 is for pre76 bikes and major components , major components are listed as motor , frame , forks , triple , hubs . Does anyone know if there are 03 Wombats that have a manufactured date of 75 . In the Hodaka book both the 03 and 02 Toad are listed as 76 models . I have a 02 (original Aus delivery) which has a build date of 10/75 . If there are 03's with 75 build dates it would help me prove my front end is class legal .
Thanks John McClean

Sold my 03 but I think it was made 75. Just need someone to check steering head label for manufacture date.

Does not look good, you're using a ED front end which is a '76 model, the 03 is a '76 also. Most manufactures start their model year in the fall, so theoretically the front ends would be available in the proceeding year .

Yeah , both 03& 02 are listed as 76 models in the Hodaka book , but my 02 is plated as a build date of 10/75 . If 03 Wombats were around with 75 build dates I'd be in the clear . Really the o ly issue I have will be triple clamps , as forks are identical externally as 74-75 TS Suzuki forks and hub was also fitted to the 02 Toad , which I have with the 75 build date . I am hoping to prove the triples are OK to use , as I don't really want to try and make something else fit for one event , as what Ihave works nicely

Strath,
Your thoughts in the last post are correct. Those forks were not made by Hodaka and were available on many bikes in 1974 including Yamaha and Suzuki. The triple clamps are specific to those forks that were clearly available before the 1975 manufacture date. I don't know for sure if that argument will prevail in your series, but that setup is acceptable as a pre-75 package for series in the USA. Good luck!

Another thing that might work for your argument of eligibility is if the triple clamps are of “ like design”. Maybe that would be a stretch, but I know the big vintage club here,AHRMA, does allow some 75 machines and parts in the pre74 class if they are of like design.

Thanks fella's , our class is pre 76 , so only need to prove a 75 build date . There's 2 03's that I kniw of out here , so will try and find their build dates , if either were built in 75 I'm in business . If anyone has a 75 plated 03 that they could send ne a photo of model number/build date of the plate that would help .
Thanks , John
