burned up basket case

time to start this project. first problem to solve is the front rim, the fire burned up the tire right where the size would be and the rim its self needs replaced. if im thinking right i should be able to get any rim of the same size that matches the spoke count and lace it up or buy a whole new assembly i just cant figure out which assembly would fit my front axel. it has 30mm forks and the frame # 63870 and the engine # 56477 makes it a 92 ace 100 any thoughts on the mater would be apprecated

First what is the end game for this bike? Restore or ride? In theory yes any rim with a comparable spoke pattern should be a replacement. Take pics of the spoke pattern for future reference if you're gonna do the relace. Are the spokes and nipples in good shape? Or are you gonna replace those?

this bike is going to be my 10 year old grandsons bike. he is going to help build it. theres a lot in need of help with it.like the lower forks got hot not bad enough to hurt them structurally but they will get painted, so clean it up get it running so we can trail ride and then see where it leads. this summer / fall he was riding a 1964 honda 90 and quickly out grew out of it so this will be the next step as for the spokes like to save them but we will see. we took the spokes off of the b+ we did last winter and re-laced them very humbling......albert

The bike came with a 19" front rim.

As for getting ANY 19" rim with 36 spokes, that probably would not work as most rims have the spoke angle drilled for a certain hub. Different size hubs, styles, etc. take different spoke angles. You would need to get a rim made for the size hub you have (standard Hodaka Hub) and for the spoke lacing pattern (which affects the length of the spokes and their angle in the rim).

every things off of the frame and got into the forks thanks to the video from socalhodaka we walked right through them. nice hands on learning for my navigator .the inside looked good the outside not so much. need a little more work

victor rim from ebay came yesterday and its a whole lot better than what i had it will work great so thanks for the help again. jumped ahead on the project thanks to my boss . he needed to sand blast some stainless steel stoves he had made so Saturday morning , i have to add it was 10 degrees out, he rented a sand blaster and i helped him out if we could blast my frame so frames now primed, pretty cheap,couple of hours and cold feet....albert

Before you toss those fork legs, try rubbing them down, briskly, with some wadded up aluminum foil and some Coca Cola! The acid in the Coke will break down the rust and the aluminum foil will burnish off the rust, without scratching the chrome! Takes a little bit of effort, but I may surprise you! Here’s a tool box I did with just aluminum foil & water! Victor

gave the forks another go and well there as good as they get heres a little before and after the coke did seem to get more of them cleaned up . we painted yesterday good learning day went to auto valu here in town got the paint ,reducer, accelerator,and clear coat. we rattle canned the b+ we did last year wanted to step it up on this one. we had to paint the lower fork tubes so wanted to get a good coat on it. the price for all of that is not for the faint of heart, we both learned some things good day....albert

Don’t know if it will improve the look for you, but you might try some Tarnex on those tubes now. Tarnex is a tarnish remover. You just wipe it on and let it sit, then rinse it off. Usually used for brass or silverware, but it may work for the chrome ad well! ; D Victor

looking thru the motor and replaced the control shaft parts, springs and things, made the holder from the resonator , good thing it doesn't need to look good to work, put it in a pipe clamp with a air hose end that fit over the shaft and pressed the clip on it did take a wile to figure out but necessity is the mother of invention. on to the clutch found a cracked basket and the clutch plates are kind of rusty and pitted, i do have a question thou, it looks like from the resonator " clutch blueprinting" that you can use screws that have threads on the length of the screw shaft, how about the wire is that still called for or are there other ways to keep the screw from moving ? ......albert

There's an ongoing debate regarding the most secure method to fasten the clutch pack together. I'm a safety wire guy but many chose to use locking nuts (ie Ny-loc). I'd say its all a matter of preference as both are perfectly adequate, but the locking nuts would likely be a time saver.

well its been a busy December and January. didnt get a lot done on the burned up project but was able to get some parts taken care of . gave the magneto case side, clutch side cover and the magneto assembly frame to a backwoods mechanical genius. well as i do i was looking at ebay and found a pair of side cases i could not pass up there better than the ones i had fixed so i will use them, then i found a mag assy frame i could not pass up better than the one i had fixed, than i found a clutch and it seems to be a better one also so following the resonators instructions i went and blue printed it very easy to follow, thanks Captain Eddie, the clutch side case is pretty well fixed so i will use this one. found a tank that will work and a seat. so today my side kick gets out of school early so will be putting the clutch together and getting the cases ready for the new bearings and seals. the cylinder did go to hodaka dave and got all bored and ready to go really came back looking good very nice work.its going to need some more TLC hopefully it will kick start us on getting this thing finished..... so the question i have this time is the clutch wire .. if it looks good can it be used again or do you replace just as a mater of course? thanks ....albert
