Working on the Site Tonight

Post by Makotosun »

Site will look a bit different for a bit as I do some work in the back end.

You may not be able to post so please be patient with me. Hope to be done with this experiment in an hour or two.

Thanks. GBB

So I am running some tests on a conversion tonight. Assuming the proof of concept works as designed, we will be moving forward towards the new forum setup!

When I am ready to do this as a final move, we will again need to shut down the site for a bit. I will do my best to keep downtime as short as possible!

Gary! I’d be glad to volunteer for beta testing if you need someone. I am a retired IT professional and did beta testing often while I worked for NM State Police as a Network Admin & 3rd level support! Just let me know! :ugeek: Victor

Thank you! I’ll make a note of that. The issue is less testing that it is in doing the conversion of the database over to the Joomla style needed. Both are in MySQL, however, it is not my primary skill Set! Getting much closer though.

I wasn’t a programmer. I was 3rd level support and did Hardware & Network & Setver config.

Also did inititial Testing of new OS’s to see if upgrading was going to be a PITA or not.

When we got new printers, I always tested the printer config to make sure which setup would print our end user police applications.

And when the programmers did new apps or significant mods to existing apps, I usually did the beta testing to make sure the end users wouldn’t have major issues with changes.

Certified in Exchange Server, SMS, WinNT, Windows 2000, abd Win3.x through Windows 7 before retiring 14 years ago.

I also hosted websites but I never used anything more than the Firefox web hosting tool. Can’t even remember the name of it. It’s been 10 years since I used it! LOL! :ugeek: Victor

So the site was offline for a few hours on Sunday. My apologies. Digging under the hood on this contraption is kinda like adjusting a Hodaka shifter for a beginner. BUT - Progress is being made. The Existing forum has been successfully duplicated on a test server so we can do conversion testing.

At this point, it appears we may not be able to carry over avatars (you little user pics) but will work something out on that. Attachments should be fine. You will also need to reset passwords once all is said and done. Partly due to the conversion limitations and partly for security reasons.

I have no exact ETA, but want to run some conversions of the site a couple of times successfully before I do one final shut down of the site and transfer it in final shape. As you may guess, every day that goes by between a backup and the conversion, you guys keep adding stuff which would get lost in the conversion. So there is a rhyme and reason to my madness. Thanks for the patience. I see a small glimmer of light now.
