Re: Oil Leak
Unfortunately it most likely was a spring, holds the tapered plastic piece tight to the taper in the body. Good luck finding it. Next time you disassemble one do it inside an empty 5 gal pail, that way if things fly they will be contained to some extent.

Re: Oil Leak
After looking at the plastic pieces in your photo, they look like cable ends to me.
Re: Oil Leak
Thanks! On both posts. I’ll check around the work bench more tomorrow when there is good light. How big is the spring? Victor

Re: Oil Leak
Well it’s been 24 hours and we still have a clean plate & nothing running down the stator wire insulator! Victor

Re: Oil Leak
I have to ask how did you line up your bearing seat to weld it to ?
Re: Oil Leak
Lining it up wasn’t an issue. It broke because the case cooled off too fast and the bearings weren’t cold enough. I had it alumawelded by a very good guy here in town. The whole piece cracked off around the rolled edge and it fit back together like a puzzle piece! I was very lucky and he did a great job! It cost me $40 to do this case half and two shifter covers with broken bolt hole where the chain wraps around it! Victor

Re: Oil Leak
Lest the above comment cause concern/fear of having to be precise with temperatures when replacing bearings, the bearing boss did not break due to temperature problems. That is a very common failure when the bearing is hammered "home" without direct, solid support on the underside as the bearing is being driven in place. While not recommended, bearings can be driven in place with both the bearing and case at room temperature.
If the case is simply laying on its side on the work bench as the bearing is being driven, the underside of the bearing boss is NOT being supported . . . and the last whack which finally "seats" the bearing, often also breaks the bearing boss. Solid wood block support is required under the bearing boss when driving bearings "home".

Re: Oil Leak
Well , it was supported by a wood block. So I guess it was just that last whack! I have done this before, but not with Hodakas. We now have a press to do this and it shouldn’t happen again. Victor
