Hodaka Engine Codes

Post by Joe Ormonde »

I`m sorting out my Super Rat engine cases and still can`t find what the Beginning Engine No. for the 1970 Hodaka Super Rat is. Having the correct engine in anything is important to me. I`m wondering if Hodaka did what Honda did for the 1973 1974 CR250M . The Honda guys don`t know the Beginning Engine No. for 1974 and say that 1973 1974 was a continuous run of engines. I just try my best to get my facts correct BUT it`s hard when the information can`t be found or I repeat incorrect info from someone else. Husqvarna seems to be the easiest to figure out. I`m slowly putting my 1970 Husqvarna 400 Cross back together and the Engine Codes or Serial Numbers are plain and simple: 1969 is 1969, 1970 is 1970 and so on. Hodaka seems to be a little harder to figure out.You would think that a huge Corporation like Honda would have superior records compared to Hodaka but that doesn`t seem to be the case. Joe Ormonde.

Hello, I do not think you will find an exact engine number chart for the Hodaka,s If it did exist it is long gone or hiding out somewhere, but I have a 1971 official Hodaka parts usage chart book that seems to be the most correct frame info we can find, per Terry Larson, and old shop owner Clarence Tabor and others I talked to this weekend at Hodaka days. Here is what it says for Super Rats; #93 B37211/B53112, #93A--A38713/A51012, this the best I can help you with.

I am trying to do the same research on early ACE 90,s., I suggest you asks Hodaka owners whom will respond to you, what is thier engine number for bikes that correspond to the above frame numbers and work up a chart of engine numbers as best you can.
If lucky, someone will be able to supply info as to where engine number info is. Hope this helps a little Bruce Young Hodakapartsidaho.com

Thanks! I have all the Info. for 1971. It would sure be nice to have a chart starting with the Ace 90 all the way up the 1972B+ for EVERY Year but that breakdown may not exist. Lets say someone has a 1965 Ace 90. They could go to the chart and know exactly what the Engine Code Starting and Ending for that year is.Clarence Taber may have something. Even the 1971 1972 B+ shows the Beginning Engine Code BUT not where 1972 Starts. The value of ALL these Hodakas just keeps going up and the correct codes on the engine is critical for maximum Value. I called and EMAILED several sellers about the Engine Codes on the 1971 Super Rats they were selling and 2 in 3 were WRONG!!! Just cobbled up to sell them. The chart Paul has is a huge help but we sure could use a Engine Code/ Seral# chart for the engines. This information just may not exist for every separate year and Model Hodaka.Joe Ormonde

I don't believe a chart ever was made designating beginning frame or engine numbers for a calendar year. Beginning frame and engine numbers for specific models is the data which was tracked. As has already been mentioned "model" was far more important in the Hodaka records than "year".

Joe;; the info I sent was printed in 1971, it shows all frame number for ACE90, Ace91racing, Ace 92, Ace92A and ACE 92B, I will send those frame numbers tomorrow. Keep looking, engine numbers are somewhere I am sure but just where is anybody,s guess. Keep us all informed as you gain info, I too am very interested in getting to bottom of all correct engine and frame info. Bruce Young

It looks like the information for the Hodaka frames is excellent. Paul Stannard when he has time will search for the information i`m looking for. Real simple: Model 93 Super Rat.The first Super Rat off the assembly line in January of 1970. The Engine was stamped Mxxxx. What 4 numbers followed the M? Does it matter? Model 93A is what I have. I don`t want a Model 93 or model 93B engine in my Model 93A. I don`t want a Model 92B engine in my model 96. I want my stuff correct. That`s all. Countless Hodakas that have been restored are incorrect. We can only do the best we can with the information that we have. The more information we can find the better. When I bought my Super Rat I asked the owner of Rural Cycle in Norco CA. why my Super Rat had a 3.25-18 tire on it and not a 3.50 it was supposed to have. You see I read in the Magazines at that time that it came with a 3.50-18 rear tire. The Magazines were wrong so I was wrong. After that I try not to be a Human Parrot. I question everything! Hi Joe the very first Super Rats were out in 1969. Sorry that is all I can add to this for now but you had mentioned Jan of 1970 above.

Thanks to all!!! I also apologize for my Humbug comment. It seems that we can only do our best. I bought a 1973 Dirt Squirt a couple of years back that the Engine code was wrong but I knew it when I bought it. It was P60278 and the Model 96 starts at P62366. I located a case slightly higher than P62366 and corrected it. No sweat! Once again, Thanks to all! Joe Ormonde.

My data shows the following ------
92 starting with engine# P20001 and frame# A17381 and ended in A38712
92A starting with engine# P40001 and frame# A38713 and ended in frame# A51012-----
92B starting with engine# P49101 and frame# A51013 -----
92B+starting with engine#P58852 and frame# A67613 -----
The model 92 had 17 inch wheels while the 92A through the 92B+ had 18 and 19 inch wheels.
Some feel the 92A never existed ---
There is a copy of the 1976 letter dated November 22, To Hodaka dealers from PABATCO--- on page 62 of the Ken Smith book HODAKA the complete story of Americas favorite trail bike -------------Clarence
