Rim width for 21" front 18" rear?

Post by motovate »

Been looking and kinda find bits and pieces - But------

What I'm looking for is - what is the correct rim width for 3:00/21 front and 3:50/18 rear rims? For non nobby - dual sport type tyres.

Also is it any different for 19" front 18"rear if I decide to go for the Flat Track look - how big a 19" tire can I put on the front?

and how many spoke holes & spokes do I need for the front and rear If I go new rims???

I'm back to building an 02 Dirt squirt into a ????? Lengthened swing arm, NOS old school road racer/flattracker type fiberglass seat, lights etc to make it legal. It came with 14" tires rims/rims, I picked up a set of supposed to be Road Toad 21"/18" complete rims that were good but the chrome is flaking off & I'm not 100% sure yet if the old rims/hubs were Hodaka and if the new rims/hubs are Hodaka.

Just getting back into that project and most every thing is stuffed way back in a trailer.

Thinking some out there Knows!!!!!

Thanks - LBM

The rims will be 36 hole. If you are going for the flat track look you want Dunlop K70. 400-18 rear. 400-19 front. For a road racer, I don't know.

On second thought, for a 100 or 125 you will want to scale down the tires to 300 or 350.

For new rims you need to be concerned about the angle the at which the holes are drilled. The angle is determined by the size of the hub and the lacing pattern. Finding stock rims will make things much easier.

Consult the Hodaka parts listings for stock rim sizes.

Thanks for the input I finally found a rim width chart on the web - 2.75 - 3.10 Tire = 1.85" wide rim, 3.25 - 3.60 Tire = 2.15 wide rim & & 4.00 Tire = 2.50 wide rim. I knew there was a standard just wondering what it was when I was looking at new rims.

Any one stick a 4:00- 19 on a "regular" 3:50-19" rim - wondering how much the side walls are pulled in???.

"Larry S" - I'm thinking you are thinking a 4:18/19 tire being too much tire for a 100 or a 125 is performance based??? I'm leaning towards the "Old School Flat Track" look and can gear it down a bit for just putting around if it will fit between the rear swing arm and not rub - of a 01/02 Squirt Toad. Not sure what the new Flat Trackers are running for tires now-a - days?

I'm taking the frame w/a 1 1/2" lengthened swing arm down this Monday to a new local (80 mile round trip) powder coater and get them powder coated Black. First time I ever tried getting something powder coated instead of paint.

It's a slowly evolving project subject to changes at the whim's of - - - -- - me :)

That's all part of the fun, Moto. For many, the Hodaka motorcycle is a blank canvas and the finished bike a manifestation of the builders imagination rendered in sharp relief. There's been so many great examples on this forum alone. Seems like that flexibility (Hodakability) was designed into the manufacturing process. Pretty cool. Looking forward to discovering where your imagination takes you on this build!

Yes, I was thinking performance based. For the "Look" 400 would be good. For performance 350 would be better.

There is a similar thread on the Facebook Hodaka fan club page, Check it out.

Well so much for Charts vs actual. I dug out the 21/18 Road toad wheels which I believe are stock and measured the interior width with a Caliper. I found a DID mark on both rims and a 1.85 mark on the rear. The front 21 measured 1.57 width inside about right for a 250/21 tire vs 1.85 in the chart for a 300/21 tire. The rear measured 1.85 agreeing with the stamp and about right for a 300/18 tire vs 2.15 for a 325/350 /18 tire and 2.50/18 for a 400 tire.

Not real sure if this means much other then the stock rims are on the narrow side for up sizing tires.

The rear rim looks pretty good so I'm gonna just run it after cleaning it up. The front is not all that great - could clean up some with a lotta SOS pads & time.
