Paint

Post by djdesantis »

I need to repaint an Ace 100 B+. Paul no longer sells paint so does anyone have a brand color out there that is as close as we can get to the actual color? Prefer not to powder coat if I can help it. Lee, if you see this, what do you use for your restorations? Thanks all, see you at HD next month!

Try VHT SP119 Chevy Red Orange. You can clear coat it with VHT145 Clear gloss. It`s as close as it gets and holds up fantastic!!! I will post photos as soon as my son shows me how but until then go to EBAY. Look up SUPER RAT SOLD Listings. I sold a new Carburetor and you can see the dusty frame tube. Joe Ormonde.

I did the Chevy Victory Red for my Red Toad! Bought it at O’Riley’s in their rattle can section! They also have the clear coat to go with it!

Just to add to Joe's comment, if you use chevy orange in whatever brand be aware that there are two flavors of orange. One really really orange and another that's more of a red orange, which I'm sure what Joe is referring to.

For my Ace 100 B+, I used a paint I got from Lowe’s. It was their brand or Valspar Rust Spray, and comparable to the Rustoleum Red. Here’s a photo of the frame after painting.

I also used a grey primer underneath it. :ugeek: Victor

You bet Go Hercules!!! The other Chevy paint is TERRIBLE!!! I painted my Super Rat 4 years ago and it still looks fantastic. When my Rat was 4 years old, it faded to that awful orange color. The best way to describe the color when my bike was Brand New would be TANGERINE. Some faded and some did not. I found out that my Super Rat was painted with Synthetic Enamel:Not Acrylic Enamel. That`s why it faded so fast. Joe Ormonde.

This stuff is bright and a good match. I've used it on the last two restorations. #7564 Safety red. Sometimes hard to find. Try Farm stores or online.

A couple years ago, I spent a few weeks and the extra dollars for a professional color match. The end result was an indistinguishable color match against the test frame. I used the main Frame support under the tank that looked to have never been exposed to direct sunlight and the inside of an early headlight bucket. Since I had intended to paint more than one Hodaka, I asked them to save the color formula, which they did under "Hodaka Red". Here's a couple photos to show: (The 2nd Photo shows an unpainted and a little faded Air cleaner for reference. The 3rd photo is a 2nd Air Cleaner that I painted using the same paint.)

I usually have them put it in rattle cans for me for a couple extra dollars. The benefit of this is that I can also have them mix it as a lacquer, enamel or two-stage. These photos depict two-stage.

Good stuff here, thanks for all of the info. Rogers color looks spot on for my less than 20/20 vision. At least the best we can do to represent the Hodaka moniker.

That terrible. He has the prices listed right there on the web site. If you feel it is too high, don't buy it, but don't complain and ruin it for those of us that are willing to pay for a higher quality product. Snowflakes!!!

Rylan, unless you're doing a museum resto, I wouldn't worry too much about getting the exact paint color. Just get close and you'll be very happy with it if it's going to be a rider

Any quality paint shop should be able to get a very close match to the stock colors.

I ended up using the Chev orange red paint, and found this to be a very very close match for the 100B+. Covered with clear. Thanks for the info. On my way to the reassembly now.
