97 Kick Start shaft

Restoring a 97 basket case and discovered a weird kick start shaft problem. It appears to protrude 1.5" from case. The previous owner tried to bend the original straight kick lever but that wouldn't clear the frame , then he tried a bend kick lever and that hit the pipe. So he beat the crap out of the pipe to help clear. The shaft part numbers appear to be all the same .

Any help out there ?

Neither of the 2 you show pictures of are Model 97 kickers. One may be Wombat or Ace and the other is a Road Toad/Dirt Squirt or late model 03 Wombat.

Kick start shafts and kick start levers are two different things. And as mentioned, neither of the kick start levers shown in the photos are the right one for the Super Combat. You can look up the proper part number on the Strictly Hodaka web site (look for model identification stuff and then you'll find Illustrated Parts Lists by model).

Here’s a photo of the fiche showing the Model 97 kick lever. Looks like the 2nd picture is the correct one, but does it appear to be bent, or is it just camera distortion? Also it’s closeness to the frame may indicate it’s not the correct one, unless it’s just bent. :ugeek: Victor

It’s not a Road Toad kick shaft. Those do not have a straight kick shaft. :ugeek: Victor

For clarification, the 02 Road Toad uses a straight kicker, much different from a model 99, and similar to the 97 but different. You can also use a 250 kicker on a 97 Super Combat. I trimmed the rubber bump stopper on the clutch case and let the kicker ride farther forward toward the front of the bike. It folded in nicely and stayed out of the way. Many a vintage mx was enjoyed with this setup. The problem with other kickers on SCs are frame and pipe clearance, and the SC and 250 levers bring the swivel knuckle further out and away from the frame.

The second kick lever looks like a 03 Wombat lever. Looks a lot like a 97 Super Combat lever, but doesn't stick out as far when folded out, thus on a Super Combat will hit the frame.

Also noted you have a non mod 97 right engine cover. The quick giveaway is the location of the oil dipstick. Good luck and good looking bike.

Good job on the restore, locknut. I saved one from the junk yard myself, recently.
