Can someone ID this wheel
Can someone ID this wheel
Hi everybody, I just went to respoke the rear wheel of my Super Combat, and the supplied spoke kit does not fit. The kit part no is 979211, which going off the parts fiche should be correct. The new spokes are way too long. Either incorrect spokes in packet or incorrect wheel fitted on bike??

Re: Can someone ID this wheel
The wheel hub is from a 98 Super Rat 100. The spokes you got are for the front 21" wheel. I am lacing 98 wheels now.
Re: Can someone ID this wheel
Jeff if the spokes came from us which I assume they did there were two separate sets of spokes provided with the bike. One set for the front wheel (21") with the conicle hub and the other set for the rear wheel (18") and the cushioned hub. Did you receive both sets we had sent with the spares?
Thank you
Paul

Re: Can someone ID this wheel
Yes Paul, I received both sets of spokes from you, the front wheel has already been done and the spokes were fine. Just not sure if it is actually a 97 wheel or maybe incorrect spokes? Also the nipples won't fit through the holes in rim (although no big deal, I often redrill rims when upgrading to s/steel spokes)

Re: Can someone ID this wheel
Judging by the length of the brake cam lever you may have a model 99 Road Toad rear hub. Is the rear rim a chrome steel item? If so, you may have a Road Toad 17" rear rim as well, in which case your spokes will be too long.

The cam lever is the same on the 98 and 99. The hub and all parts are the same but you could have a 17" rim. Good point by previous poster. The 98 SR has an alloy rim and not steel.
Re: Can someone ID this wheel
No it's a 1.85x18" alloy DID old style (ie with just a size sticker, no size or build date stamped in rim, with the old DID logo stamped.

Re: Can someone ID this wheel
Okay, I did a little checking. Both of the spokes you have are for 18" wheels, but the longer spokes are for a 3 cross lacing pattern and the shorter spokes are for a 2 cross lacing pattern. My Combat Wombat has the longer spokes and 3 cross lacing, but my Super Combat has the shorter spokes with 2 cross lacing.
I have not tried to use 3 cross lacing on the Super Combat rims, but I suspect that the angle of the drilling for the spoke holes would not allow you to install a 3 cross lacing pattern. Perhaps someone on this board has tried 3 cross lacing on Super Combat rims and can chime in.

Re: Can someone ID this wheel
Think you are correct there Brian, your suspicions are spot on, the angles for 3 cross won't work. To redrill a Rim in such good condition for age would just destroy it. Will see if Paul can supply the shorter spokes. Thanks for your help.
