Engine # for an Alsport/Steen

I recently purchased thru Craigslist a Alsport/Steen for $125. Not having heard of one, I felt it needed saved. So in process of getting it up and running, I need a few parts. The motor is a Hodaka 98cc. Not sure of the year on the bike.

My question is, the engine # starts with an E and I didn't see it on the Hodaka "bike" vin# ref chart. Any suggestions on how to find out what kind of motor it is? Any idea the year of the bike would be great to know too.

First, congratulations on an EPIC score. I know people who would give their eye teeth for that ride. It looks to be nearly complete and they are the darlings of vintage dirt bike collectors everywhere. They really are highly collectible. The Hodaka "E" motors were engines manufactured for either replacements for Hodaka motorcycles or for sales to other makers (such as Alsport Steen, Bonanza. etc.) to run their machines. Send a PM to "Thrownchain" and after he finishes weeping over the fact that you scored that sweet ride for a buck-and-a-quarter, he'll give you the dope on it. Also, go to the "Strictly Hodaka" website and you'll find information of the "E" series motors and a source for the parts to get it back into fighting trim. Congratulations!!

Hey backwoods, good score at a good price. What area of the country are you in? Yes the "E" motor are correct for Steen motorcycle. It's basically an Ace 100 motor so all parts can be located for the motor on that parts fiche. If you need help locating or need info on the rebuild let me know and I'll help where I can.

Thanks Matt. Sounds like I have an important mission, and I'm up for the task. Yes it is nearly complete. Main 2 things I need to fire it up is magneto/stator assy and a carburetor. Few things were missing like battery box (as it came w/headlight), rear fender, bracket for seat/tank, and air filter box.

Not sure the story on the bike, the guy I bought it from I think went to auctions here in the midwest and bought it on a whim.

Nice!! Magnetos are plentiful as are carburetors. Not sure about the battery boxes, but the engine will run off the magneto alone. As Thrownchain stated, the engine is an Ace 100 motor, but you might want to check out the number on Strictly Hodaka for more detail. You also might consider getting a copy of the Official Hodaka Workshop Manual which gives clear details on all matters pertaining to engine and transmission work. Most here will agree that for anyone who wrenches on Hodakas, it will be the best money you spend. I'm glad to see the bike has finally made it into capable hands.

The workshop manual you're interested in covers the Ace 90, Ace 100, Ace 100B, and Ace 100 MX Super Rat. The preceding manual covers the Ace 90 only. There is also a Wombat workshop manual that covers the 125cc Wombats and Combat Wombat. The one you really want is the first one I mentioned. Any of the manuals I mentioned will provide information pertaining to your engine, but the expanded Ace manual is really the bible. At the time of its publication, Hodaka really made only one size .

There's a copy of the Ace90/100/100B/100MX manual on ebay for $25. That's a really fair price. Good score if you have the bread.

Thanks again Matt for the heads up on the manual. I bought the very one you pointed out. Should be here be the 20th. I'm in a cleaning phase right now. I pulled the motor and and both side covers discovering the missing flywheel, points, condenser and the stator looking in need of replacement.

Agreed. Don't throw in the towel just yet. The plate will probably be ok. The coils will be a crap shoot. Glad you found the manual. If it was on there for another day or so I would have scored just to have a better copy. Mine's getting pretty oily. I'm glad you jumped on it. You're now good to go.

No towel throwing yet...LOL I was hoping for a complete NOS assy like I was seeing on Ebay cheap, but had no luck. Then I was checking Strictly Hodaka and found no Flywheel (or is on back order?) not sure. All the other parts seam to be there. So back to Ebay I went looking for used or new flywheels and yuck, most are in very rough shape. They may look crappy and still work, so I'm not ruling out one of them yet, just trying to determine which ones are functional and if anyone else has one that is know to come off a working bike for sale.
If anyone has seen any of these flywheels on ebay and believe they will work form me based on past builds let me know and I'll jump on it.
