Kansas Summer

Post by hodakamax »

It's here. Heat indices predicted 100 by 10 AM and 108 later today with high humidity and weather heat warnings. We got an early shot at it this morning and toured our prairie restoration that we've worked on for years. Check out these Compass plants which are one of the many perennial sunflower species of the Kansas prairie. Early rains made the plant growth "over your head" as shown. How would you have gotten through all of this we always wonder about early settlers crossing Kansas.

So much for being outside today. I did wash up some parts for the project and will try to stay in the air conditioned garage today. Not all bad, I don't have to paint on the house. Maybe I can get some forks underway on the 2 The Max bike and stay cool in the process.

Same weather that we've got in Alabama, but it seems to get less tolerable every year. I get out real early before it heats up and get yard chores done. Double whammy this year-- we've had rainy spells which make the grass and weeds grow and it's been too wet or too hot to mow. And the double downside of this weather is that it's too hot and sticky to do trail riding on the Hodie. Though I try to get out a couple of timrs a week to keep the bike and myself limbered up. And there is always road testing anf fine-tuning thr jetting.
Fall will be here soon enough.

I drove across country back in the '70s. Seemed like it took me forever to get out of Kansas. It was midsummer, hot as hell, and KS was as flat as a pancake. (no a/c in my '71 Datsun pick-up).

What o couldn't believe about riding through Kansas was the wind! I've never spent so much time riding at a 10-15 degree angle in my life!
When I stopped for ⛽️ man there told me the average wind speed in KS was 22 mph! That includes all the time there is no wind. But how do you put up with it. Makes me appreciate the song by Kansas called "Dust In The Wind!" Victor

Hey Victor, Yes the wind does blow but it usually a Spring thing. It sometimes blows in the Summer and helps with the high temperatures. All and all it's not a bad place to live. You usually have to pay your dues in Summer with about a month of heat. The fall tis the perfect time in Kansas with no wind or storms, trees changing and beautiful days. Spring can be really nice but sometimes really windy and the Tornado threat thing. Winters continue to be milder each year and snow and freezing ponds are becoming more infrequent. Pluses and minuses as with all places. It's home!

It is said that our 'internal carburetor' is set for our home location at birth and that we never quite function in perfect tune anywhere else... ;)

True. I was born in Idaho, grew up in Alabama and have always been a "cold weather dog".

One of the things I love about Santa Fe is we have all 4 seasons, but we don't have extremes on either end! Winters we can get snow, but usually not large accumulations and it melts off quickly. Sometimes it even sublimates. Summer is usually the hottest in June with temps reaching into the low 90's. July we get our afternoon showers while ch don't last long but usually bring highs back down into the low to middle 80's like it is now! Spring can sometimes be extremely short, going from light snow to moderate temps to warm weather quickly. And fall can seem to last from early September into mid November with cooler weather for great riding! (Almost) Never too hot, (almost) Never too cold and being at 7,000 feet & surrounded by mountains means no tornadoes and no coastline so no hurricanes! I returned here 38 years ago and love, Love, LOVE IT!!! ; D Victor
