Rebuild on 98 SuperRat

Hey Guys, just wondering if there is a rebuild kit for 1974 98 Super Rat. I have the motor split and need new seals and bearings. Also, on the top end, what should I be looking for as far as wear and tear. What is normal and do I necessarily need to have anything done to it besides new gaskets? What special tools do I need to pull bearings?

Whats your name and where are you from? Post a photo of your project. If you have a local bearing shop around you can get bearing and seals there.

Theres a couple other o-rings, shift kits rebuild, heavy duty kicker and a few others stuff. So say where your from as other Hodaka folks may be near you for support.

Thanks, I'm Shaun, from FDL Wisconsin. I will get some photos posted for you soon. The bike I got was in pretty good condition overall. It was my uncles but sat for quite a few years. I had it running but the clutch wasn't working well and compression wasn't were it needed to be so I thought I would start breaking it down and restoring it. I really wouldn't have to do much but I want it to look brand new when I'm done. Plan on keeping it around awhile so why not.

I've seen some of your vids. Look forward to seeing more. Question, I can't seem to seem to get the rotor off of the crankshaft so that I can remove it, is there a trick to it?

Here some photos. The one of the bike put together was after I cleaned it up pretty good. Obviously it was well preserved while it sat. But still need work.

Wow, that baby looks like new. You need the special rotor puller.

Shaun, the rotor takes a special tool which is kind of pricey, but you can borrow a puller from Auto Zone that will do the trick. I'm currently working on a model 98 too, but mine has a super combat cylinder and head, plus larger carb. The colors of the 98 is a navy blue, a bit darker than the royal blue of the 97 super combat. Here are a few pics of my build so far.The air box was modified so that the intake boot would fit due to larger carb/cylinder.

Thanks for the info guys. Questions, do most guys do their own paint jobs? Should I be painting the motor while it's all apart or after rebuild? What should I expect to pay to have the frame painted? Is that another do it yourself type thing. Any info would be great. Never rebuilt anything before but not afraid to get my hands dirty. Suggestions welcomed. Thanks gentlemen!

You know original is the hot thing right now and yours is pretty sweet. I would think about leaving it.

Socal, do you mean I should just finish the motor build and leave paint alone at this point? Don't paint anything?

I picked up some bearings today, some of them were sealed. I'm assuming that's fine. They weren't cheap either. Anyways, do a lot of guys freeze them before installing or use heat or both?

Are you referring to wheel bearings of engine bearings? Sealed wheel bearings are your choice. Engine bearings should not be sealed.

Yes, I'm referring to the engine bearings. So don't use the sealed ones on the motor. Stupid question but can I ask why?

What you need to remove the rotor is a CDI rotor puller. Paul sells them right here (this site) at Strictly Hodaka. Here is the part number, etc.

CDI Rotor Puller- Part# 203006

While they might seem a little pricey (depends on your point of view), it is much less expensive than buying a new rotor, crankshaft or engine casing.

You don't use the sealed bearings in the engine because if you do, they won't get any additional lubrication from the fuel/oil mix. In wheels, they are fine as they don't spin anywhere as fast as in an engine. You can use the bearings, as long as you remove the seals before installing them.
