looking at replacing the coil on a Super Combat.Has anyone experience with generic 6/12V coils that are touted as suitable for CDI (and points )ignition on Hodakas?
Ideally you would always use the original part but I am curious about these alternative coils.
Would they be more likely to result in failure of the CDI " computer"? - they require slightly different installation as they only have a single +ve wire to ignition and suggest that the stator should go to earth?

Hey Jack,
I have not used the generic coils you mention but I can comment on the generic coil single + wire issue...at least as it relates to Hodaka point ignitions. Most factory Hodaka point ignitions have two wires going to the coil. One black / positive. One blue / negative. The Hodaka blue negative wire goes from the coil to ground on the stator assembly.
So, if the generic coil windings ground through its mounting point to the frame and the stator is grounded through the engine to the frame a complete circuit is created.....should work. Will it play well with the other ignition components is unknown to me. Want to make sure loose engine mount bolts don't compromise the generic coil ground circuit? Attach the blue wire from the engine to the mounting point of the generic coil....would need to change the bullet connector on the blue wire to a ring terminal type.
I have not studied the cdi ignitions enough to know if the generic coil could be made to work. I have doubts but no real info. Certainly would not want to fry limited cdi units. The generic coil would likely be a workable solution for most Hodaka point ignitions but I have not tried it.

That makes a lot of sense and confirms what my electronically illiterate brain was telling me. Probably would work with CDI but might shorten its life span . That equals false economy so better to stick with an original coil.
Might try one of the aftermarket coils on a bike with points at some time in the future (when I move on From the Super Combat! )
