I know Virginia may seem far away, but I would send the motor to Danny Cooke, a forum member here. Danny rebuilds Hodaka motors for vintage racers and does a damn fine job of it! Your motor will be better than new when Danny is done with it. And shipping isn't as bad as you would think! Just my / cents! ; D Victor

Bike will start when pushed , wont start when kicked. thinking ignition and or carb work. I did the basic stuff, plug, battery air filter.

Have you got the tool to do a compression check? Inexpensive and will tell you if you need motor work or not.

Yep, that's a good number, not "new" spec, but good enough to run. How is the spark at the plug? Nice and crisp? New plug? Fresh gas? Carb been cleaned?

fuel plus compression plus spark is what you need...compression good, my bet is on fuel especially since you can bump start it...low speed circuit problem..choke operational?..pilot jet and air passages clean, you have to crack the throttle when you bump start it don't you?

After you push start it . . . will it sit and smoothly idle after the engine warms up? I'm guessing no . . . but will wait to hear before commenting further.

correct it will not idle after running you have to keep it going. Previous owner stated the carb was cleaned. I am not so sure. Clean fresh gas being used. Choke appears to work.as it will shut off if you pull it after its running. Yes it does need a little gas on when started when bumping. Hey thanks for the reply !

I'm betting the pilot jet or the pilot circuit (or both) are plugged. Fuel flow through the pilot circuit is required for normal operation from zero thru about 1/8th throttle. You'll need to research Mikuni carbs a bit to get a handle on just what the pilot circuit is. The pilot jet is easy to remove and clean -- but the pilot circuit can be a bit more difficult clean, and it must be CLEAN.

Does the scooter have an in-line fuel filter? 40 year old steel tanks sort of dictate that one be installed.

Just a guess on my part, but I don't think Jim is very familiar with (or comfortable) working on the inners of a carb. If correct, that is why he was looking for someone in his area for assistance.

Bob,

You are not too far from me. I am in King of Prussia. Roger Duttry is in Lancaster. Do you think you might like to ride the Allegany National Forest trail ride with us next year? I travel to York a few times a year. Our Factory is in York, just across Route 30 from the Harley Davidson factory.
