I've noticed on a couple flywheels recently where there appears to be some style of clear coat, lacquer-type finish. Both have come off bikes that at one time were apparently used for enduro work with various waterproofing maneuvers and case breather extensions. Both work well and are in pristine condition. Was this application to prevent rust? Is this currently advisable and if so, what is the proper finish product and are there any specific techniques required for proper application? Also, were they and should they be painted after rust removal and clean up? I noticed after de-rusting and clean up, during drying, my air gun removed what appears to be paint. Matt,
I have used VHT matte clear wheel paint to coat flywheels. It is good for 250 degrees and offers some degree of corrosion protection. Thin coating is good especially the inside magnets. Since it is under the shift cover I am to worried about it resistance to carb cleaner etc.
