Control shaft rebuild question
I'm finally getting back to this rebuild after a long hiatus. I bought a control shaft spring kit a long time ago. So I'm not sure if it's "space age". I can tell you the pack is labeled left and right spring. Three clips, two washers the top and the ball receiver. I read and old post about the space age not needing washers or spring orientation. Also when looking at the shaft which is right and left?? Thanks!

Left is the end where the sprocket attaches. I'm not familiar with the new space age rebuild kit so I can't answer you on that question. Left side is always left when sitting on the bike, or flywheel/sprocket side. Clutch side is right side. ; D Victor

Thanks, I found the excerpt in the manual. Unfortunately with an hour on and off with my buddy trying to get the clip on, I surrendered. Just can't afford the tool right now. Hoping I can send the part to someone on here who has the tool. Any takers?

Where are you located? There might be someone reasonable close that has the tool that you can meet and get-r-done.

Sorry I couldn't scan the diagram you were asking about in time to be of assistance - here it is anyway.
Springs labeled "left" and "right" are not the new space age springs, so you have the original design type of springs.
The snap ring tool is virtually a necessity for installing the tiny snap ring. I just won't attempt the job without the tool . . . unless it is an absolute emergency with a life in the balance (at least I think that's what it would take to make me try to install the snap ring without the tool). When you finally get to do the snap ring installation, double check (triple check even) that the snap ring retainer is fully moved "out" and the snap ring is actually down inside the snap ring retainer. If the snap ring isn't down inside the retainer . . . it will come off . . . all shifting will stop working . . . and you will get to do the job again. Bummer.

@mark glascock yes that's what I need. Unfortunately budget does not allow it right now. I was so excited to get my manual. Then the first thing putting the engine back together was this procedure!!! Ha. Thanks bullfrog, and yes Ed tried again with a mechanic friend sweat pouring from us, gave up ate ribs and cold drinks instead. Tried to wrap my head around how the tool is made. My buddy has a mill and lathe. Anyway. I'll sent it to Roger or one of you all and move on. That'll be cheaper for now. Had a deal go sour already on parts had to buy a manual after I lost mine. So the budget got a bit tight.

The Hodie control shaft spring ring setup is lot like that used on the Bendix end of a Bosch starter. A PITA if you are not used to it. The wire ring _can_ be persuaded on with a deep-well socket, and the retainer eased on with a spring-type hose clamp used like a piston ring compressor.

Rusty, I can loan you my snap ring tool IF you positively, absolutely, unequivocally, cross-your-heart PROMISE to get it back to me when you have completed the assembly. You will inevitably need to pony up the dough for one when affordable as there really is no functional alternative to the tool and you will need it in the future (trust me - I've shot them all over my shop trying to use a drift), but if that's what it takes to get that bike back in action, I'm happy to help out.

I'm in Iowa. PM me your mailing address and I'll send it your way. Master machinist and comprehensive Hodaka guru Danny Cooke made a batch of these tools featuring NOS case-hardened pins supplied by Paul and my understanding is they went live for sale here on SH. My guess is that they were all sold immediately as these necessary tools are getting rare as hen's teeth. You should contact Paul directly to determine their availability or if there is any possibility of preparing for another run.
