Tire Pumps

Off-roaders need to change tire pressures to meet conditions. What tire pumps are used?

I'm not sure bicycle pumps will work well-- they are high-pressure, low-volume devices. BMW motorcycles, on their older "R-bikes" use a frame-mounted hand pump about 12" long. Mine still works after 45 years, and the pumpsare still available for $35.

The Ace 90 and Ace 100 came with a tire pump mounted under the fuel tank. They did work in an emergency... I now carry a modern bicycle pump that has two settings (high and low pressure). It is not ideal, but will get you about 10 lbs when really needed. More of an emergency pump than a pump to adjust your tire pressures with. For that, I carry a Slime brand mini air compressor, but that only works with 12 volt batteries...

Yep, the old BMW pump was a PITA, especially to get 30 psi to seat a tire bead, but 10 psi wasn't a problem. Nowadays I use a 12v electric for emergencies. I'll get a new Beemer handpump and evaluate.

I have one of the Ace 100 pumps. Mine looks nice but doesn't appear to work. At least I haven't tried it on a tire yet.

Does anyone know how to rebuild them and if parts are needed does Paul or anyone else have parts to rebuild them? Thanks! ; D Victor

The hose pulls out of one end and screws into the other. I always thought they worked good, well, I did not say great. They have a leather plunger and I just grease it up good. It cannot work if everything is rusted and pitted. A can of whiffy jiff can work also (the spray can of air with sealer). -------------- Clarence

Whiffy Jiff? I imagine that a can of Freon could be adaptered to a tire chuck for air-ups. I'll evaluate that, too.

Victor In your pump picture that is posted, the little brass fitting on the handle end pulls out and has a hose attached. The hose then screws into the long end. ------ Clarence
