Super Rat Clutch ?

Post by MikeH »

This may be a silly question but should my super rat crank over and start with clutch lever pulled in? Kick starter just free wheels, with clutch lever pulled in gear ,I ve tried everything and now have clutch assembly out and giving it a cleaning. Mike Hall :D

Nope. Neither model Super Rat had primary kick start. You need to find neutral and then kick it over with the clutch engaged (lever not pulled in).

I think this design was done intentionally, in order to give you time to think about what you did wrong to stall the motor.

Thanks Brian , So if its does crank with lever pulled you have something together wrong or not adjusted properly right.
Brian 1 more question how free should clutch hub slide in cage ?

If the engine kicks over with the clutch lever pulled in, then the clutch is sticking. This will often happen if the engine has sat for a long time. With the clutch apart, the clutch hub should slide freely inside the cage. When moving the two parts by hand the clutch hub is easily "canted" and will stick inside the cage. It needs even pressure to slide without sticking, which will be the case when it is assembled with all the springs applying equal pressure.

If it does not move easily, check for damage, burrs, or notching of the basket.

Volume 1 #4 starting on page 3 issue of the Resonator, all about clutch and how to make it work smooth. So if you a Hodaka Club member your can find this info in the members only tab, there you can view all 24 issues of the Resonator. Well worth the $24 bucks right there.

So where did you find the "members only" tab? And back Resonators once I do? I'm having a possible clutch issue and would like to do some research before jumping in here with ignorant newby questions...

thanks, Lee

Once you successfully log into the club website, you should have the members only choices in the left hand column.

If you do not see these options after you log in, then contact the site web master for resolution.

After you get the option and select: Club Newsletter - Back Issues and then you should see all of the issues listed.
