On one of today's topics it's been noted that no service manual for the 175/250 Hodakas was ever produced. It just so happens that I'm stacking the gears on a 250SL countershaft at this moment - without the benefit of the manual that never was.
Gears first through fifth are stamped with an "A". Everything seems to mesh nicely when I stack the gears with all the A stamps facing to the right side of the engine. Can anyone confirm that this is indeed the correct procedure to assemble these transmissions so I can button up the cases with confidence? Maybe, I should have paid more attention while I was taking it apart...
At any rate: The answer is out there ( a little X Files spin) .

Thanks. With the 250 trans that would be stacking the gears with the letter A up, or toward the sprocket.
But first gear seems to be the odd one out. In order to maintain alignment with the adjacent cluster gear, the first countershaft gear is going to have to be set down opposite (A down) to the second to fourth gear sequence.
It doesn't seem right to stray from the order of the second through fifth gear orientation, but it seems to be what has to be done to make it look correct.

There are exceptions to the rule and this may be one of them. The 03 wombat gears don't stack up the same as other Hodaka models also. If the gears don't stack up properly in a given direction and they do when reversed....maybe that is the way it should be. I don't have a 250 engine apart to offer any other assistance....sorry.
Thanks all. The engine's back together - with first gear flipped. It has to be that way (shoulder facing away) to maintain alignment with the corresponding gear on the mainshaft.
So the 250 assembly rule is to stack all the gears with the stamp "A" towards the countershaft project -- except reverse the order for first gear.
