Idle gear collar

Greetings

Is there an easy way to remove the idle gear collar from a 99 main shaft that wouldn't damage anything? The collar is only $10, but I would like to be able to reuse the one that I have on hand. The main shaft that I have is bad but the collar is in good shape.

On all the Toads I have worked on, I was able to pull the collar off by hand. Have you tried wrapping a piece of an old inner tube around the collar and then using pliers? Of course the collar needs to be cleaned first.
