control shaft clip
control shaft clip
I tried to search but these words are too common, doing my first rebuild. Can the control shaft clip be put on without the special tool? Sure looks like I could lose it. Thanks
Re: control shaft clip
I have done it back in the day but it is really hard to do. There is more a chance of loosing it while trying, so you probably should have several clips before starting. If I remember correctly I used a pair a needle nose pliers and pressed the cup and spring down with them while having someone else start the clip on one end and work it around and press it down with a straight screw driver. I think I only tried it a couple times before I was smart enough to get a tool. Still have it.

Is the control shaft clip tool offered? Does Paul carry it? I would like to have one of those on hand! My first experience with the clip was a real pain in the A$$! ; D Victor

Re: control shaft clip
Be aware that there are two sizes of snap rings and therefore two sizes of the tool. I searched for "control shafts snap ring tool" and found the one for the late models listed for sale.
As for installing a clip without the tool? It can be done, but it is best to have experience and a second set of hands and patience. If you have not done several already, I would not recommend trying it without the tool.

Re: control shaft clip
OK. So my Ace 100 B+ would be the older model and so would the Model 94 bottom end in my Model 03 chassis. But the Model 99 Road Toad? Would that be the older size or the newer size? Were there differences in the control shaft size between the Model 99 and Model 02? ; D Victor

Re: control shaft clip
The RT has the smaller style of the control shaft, retainer and clip . . . IF (repeat, if) it still has the stock parts. I mention this because complete control shaft assemblies can be interchanged between ANY of the 100cc and 125cc Hodie engines. (and after 50 years there are no guarantees that any Hodie still has stock components)

Has the tool always been around? What did people do before it was made? If it was made later.

Yes, it has always been around. It shown in use in the Official Hodaka Workshop Manuals from the days of yore.
