Splitting my tank thread about threads

So I've been trying to file these threads might be too marred. Before I concern myself with tank liners... Thoughts on grinding down the top, past the threads til I get to some fresh threads? Thoughts...

The filler cap may bottom out on the tank before it properly seals at the mouth. This may cause a leak as the fuel sloshes around in the tank. Doubling up on the cap gasket may seal it but it's something to consider before grinding away at the filler.

I didn,t go out and look to see how coarse the threads are,but I wonder if you could use a small cut-off wheel on a dremmel tool kinda like a file to clean the threads?

While at first admitting that I've seen some completely unexplainable damage, it is hard for me to imagine that the tank filler threads are so bunged up that they couldn't be dressed out with a triangular file AND a commitment to take a deep breath, put on the old-world craftsman's hat and attitude and slowly work thru the problem. I'd recommend starting just below the lowest damaged thread and work your way up from there.

As already mentioned, shortening the overall height of the filler neck to simply remove damaged threads may lead to bad things.

I've got a pretty old world attitude towards crafts. I repair and make vintage switchblades as a hobby. I filed it for awhile yesterday to no avail. I will try some more. I figured as much about shortening the spout. Wondered if anyone else has tried. Thanks all!

OK Rusty. Yup, a custom knife maker knows craftsmanship! That tells me those tank filler threads are bunged up beyond my imagination. Bummer.

Rusty. I don't know what kind of file you are using, but a thought occurred to me that you might try a metal style nail file. These are very thin and may fit easily between the threads on the filler. It may take a little longer but it may work better being thin. Just my brain thinking out loud so to speak. Good luck. I hope you can resolve it. ; D Victor
