Buffing Out Chrome Tanks & Fenders

Post by viclioce »

What do you guys use? Something like the 3M polishing compound? Something else? I'm going to need to buff the tank out a lot. Want to use something which works effectively!

Also, are the Ace front and rear fenders the same size, same blank, or are they different? It seems like I have 2 front fenders, but I'm not sure. One has the holes drilled in n the center for the mounting bracket up front, and holes for mud flaps. The other has holes in pairs of two in four different places, but no close together holes for the tail light assembly. Both fenders are the same length and width.

So are both fenders from the same blank? ; D Victor

Mother's Metal polish and Chrome polish with a Mother's polishing cone works for me on the chrome tanks. The fenders are not chrome but rather stainless steel so I use a buffing wheel on them.

Ha ha funny Vic. I don't know the answer and I'm sure someone here does, but is it possible that you have two front fenders, one high mount like a 100B+, and one low mount with brackets like an Ace 90 or 100? Just trying to help you get the conversation going.

Ivan, thanks. Maybe I should post an upside down picture of the fender in question? LOL! So I guess my next question would be CAN you mount a front fender on the rear? Still need to know if they come from the same blank or not.

The idea of one being a high mount and one being a low mount seems possible. That might explain the hole pattern which doesn't match wth rear fender or the high mounted front fender. However, if it's a low mount fender, it doesn't have the legs or braces, or whatever those metal strips are.

And thanks to ddvorak fo advising the fenders are stainless! Nice to know! ; D Victor

ddvorak I have a question for you. I've never used the Mothers polish. I would like to know how effective it is at buffing out light scratches on the chrome tank? Just not familiar with the product other than seeing it on TV commercials.

I have used Never Dull on pipes and other older, tarnished looking chrome with good results but Never Dull won't buff out scratches. So just want to know before I go out and spend the money on a ball and the Mothers. And as far as the stainless goes on the fenders, do you use the Mothers on that or something else? Thanks! ; D Victor

I believe that the Mother's Metal polish has more grit to it. I start with it and finish with the chrome polish. For the stainless I use a buffing compound stick made for stainless.

OK Dale! Thank you very much! I'll give it a go tomorrow! And I may try some barkeepers helper for the fenders. It's a stainless steel cleaner! ; D Victor

OK. I definitely figured out I have two front fenders. And it does appear that I have an older one and a B+ one, the latter of which I will keep.

Is there anyone who has a rear fender they are willing to trade for a front fender? I can post a few pics of it (hopefully not upside down). It does not have the Fender Stay, but it's in pretty good shape and should clean up nicely.

Let me know! ; D Victor

OK! I got an Ace 100 B+ 1971 fender on eBy, for $40 shipped! Same year as my bike! No excessive damage just a few rust spots and needs a buffing out. It even has the rubber wire bushing where the wires exit the fender! Should have it before the weekend.

That Ace 90/100 low front fender is available to anyone who wants it for shipping. Just let me know and I'll get a shipping price for it. ; D Victor
