Some advice about my rebuild

Hello I'm rebuilding my 100b+ and this is a first for me. My end goal is to make it like a super rat but with lights. I have a stock 69 ace so I thought it would be cool to do something different with this. So that being said, I thought about putting a SR head, cylinder and carb. Someone along the way said this would be a decent performance upgrade. Will I need a different pipe? Is it even worth it? Or should I just over bore my cylinder. This all started because I don't have an air box but I have wombat and road toad ones I thought I could trade or paint. Then I thought well just super rat it out. I just don't have the knowledge you guys do about this upgrades and how it will effect other parts of the bike. Ultimately I will be riding around the city but my brother has a cabin in Michigan with over 100 miles of ATV trails I want to use it on.

Hey Rusty, I'll try to answer a few of your questions. First, an over bore will not add any measurable power except for restoring compression. You might check and follow the progress on my "Day One Project" where I'm doing much the same thing as you are talking about. I'm starting with an Ace 100 and modifying the engine with a Model 93 Super Rat cylinder and adding a 24mm carb and higher compression head. If you go this far you probably should convert it to a reed valve set-up which is also shown on the posts. Pipes help but it seems there's always an increase in noise. I'm going with the stock exhaust both for lower noise and a spark arrestor which is sometimes required on public land. I am playing with a different length header pipe but that's just an experiment hopefully to add more torque. I think you will find that the reed valve conversion will be the most dramatic modification that you can make as far as power gained and ride ability.

Anyway, my project in this case is to make a fun and trick trail bike from an Ace 100. I hope this helps!

If you really want to reed valve it give me a call. Do you have a Rat cylinder ? 4 bolt intake or an ACE cylinder 2 bolt ? I have both kinds of reeds.

I have a stock Ace 100 so it's the two bolt. Honestly this stuff is a little over my head. I just figured while its apart and missing things why not learn some things and make some changes. I'm on a budget so I don't want to go overboard. I'm sure I'd be pretty happy on a stock rebuilt engine. I guess I need a little hand holding on this one. Thanks.

I guess everything is about budget. My last project started on a budget but that aspect is starting to fail. All fun hobbies ultimately turn out to be somewhat expensive. There's certainly nothing wrong with refreshing your Ace 100 to stock. I will never forget my first stock Ace 90 that I rode relentlessly every possible waking moment for thousands of miles and years of fun. (It did get continuously modified). The stock Ace 100 is certainly a worthy trail bike good for lots of laughs and entertainment. The good thing about the brand from day one is that they can be modified in increments as the budget allows.The mods you have been thinking about can certainly be done down the line.

Sounds fair! Well one thing as I said is. I don't have a stock air box but I do have a wombat one. And I really would like to at least dress it like a super rat. If I increase the air will I need a bigger carb? Thanks! My plan was to trade sell some parts I have to get parts I need for this project. So I could always just do that for a stock box. Just wondering what changes this would make. Thanks. Constantly learning. When I first got on here I couldn't even change my points. I've learned a lot thanks!

Rusty:

While your Wombat air cleaner is capable of delivering more air than the original Ace air cleaner - your engine and existing carb will "draw in" essentially the same amount of air that it did with the original Ace air cleaner. So, no you don't "need" a larger carb as a result of having a larger air cleaner.

However, you could install a larger carb - and the larger air cleaner would be able to deliver enough air for the larger carb to actually improve performance. So that is another tuning option which you could consider either now or later (and depending upon the budget - now or later).

Ed! Yes I am, with the improved airflow what would be the proper carb size? I'm leaning towards baby steps. A fresh rebuild more air more gas... Thanks!!

Super Rat Top End On Ace 100

I put the entire reed valve super rat "package" on my B+, including the reproduction rat pipe that may still be available.

I followed a lot of this article, but not all.

If the link above does not work, you will fine the article at the Strictly Hodaka site. It's called Modifying the Ace 100 For Motocross ..... and speaks about keeping the lights.

I ride exclusively on the streets of Columbus, Ohio. It's pretty flat here.

Is it faster? You bet.

Was it worth the money? eh, maybe. I stopped counting the dollars I spent on this.

I've had a lot of fun doing it.

There's a bit of a cheap thrill when the front wheel lifts off the pavement when I snap it into second gear. And I can pass cars and trucks if I like.

I like the B+ a lot, it's all I own. But in it's stock form it's a bit too tame for me.

Columbus, Ohio??? That's where I live and in the years I've owned my hodaka I've never seen another here. Thanks I will look at the article. I familiar with it. I read a lot of that stuff when I first came to the site, but it's been awhile.

In 1974, after riding my Brand new Ace 100B+ for a year, I was going to trade it in on a 125 Wombat. My dealer convinced me to upgrade it with a Super Rat reed valve kit with a Webco high compression head and 24 mm Mikuni carb. It changed the performance so much that I never felt I needed to get a larger trail bike.
This 100B+ is now my trials bike. With a 62 tooth rear sprocket, It will climb a tree. :oops:, even if I don't want to. :roll:
Lots of low end torque and high rev pull.
I recommend you do it.

Rusty, just as "food for thought" they make a 125cc expansion kit you can bolt directly onto the Ace 100 bottom end! The guy I bought my Ace from has one on his Super Rat! If you do this mod along with the Reed valve intake you'll see a great amount of increase in power! Now I know this will cost more, but, if your already thinking of going to the SR top end combo, you might consider this option and go "all the way!" With is combo and the SR 24mm carb, you'll be pulling wheelies in 3rd gear all the time! ; D Victor
