Who does crank rebuilds?

I need a CW crank rebuilt but when I took it to have the work done locally the machinist said the bearing surfaces were too beat down to re use the crank. It also has divots on the seal surface on the ign. side from rust. Can it be repaired or should I toss it? Seems to me all the Hodaka,s I've ever worked on had a loose crank/ main bearing fit but if the seal surface can,t be repaired that would settle the issue

Send it to one of the Hodaka specialists recommended on this site. They will be able to tell you if it can be saved. If it cant be saved they can always send it back or toss it for you. I have used Roger Lippiatt to build race proven cranks for my bikes. If its a one way trip you are only out a couple bucks for shipping.

I have seen side to side clearance on the rod lower end, but not a loose fit by any means on the main crank bearings. Cold, they have a technical clearance, but it is in the hundred thousandths range. The seal surfaces might be repairable with a sleeve but I have never worked with them, so am not sure. Which bearing surfaces are you referring to that are too beat to use? The lower rod bearing is held on the crank pin, which is replaceable. If the machined bearing mount locations on the crank left and right are so damaged that a new bearing won't mount correctly, I would be surprised, but guess I would have to see it to know what the issue is. Where the bearings spun in service? That might make me think they are not good candidates for reuse due to temper issues, but others here will have more experience.

I'll also take a picture but I may have trouble trying to figure out how to load it because it will be on a computer I'm not familiar with. I don't think the crank was spinning inside the bore of the bearing but the machinist said a lot of the Japanese cranks he works on has a reduced bearing O.D. on the shaft from the hammering of the combustion cycle after a many hours of use so when he measured it with a micrometer he said it would be too loose inside the bearing

Yikes. That looks like it was left in the elements without the crank seal in place. The seal will usually limit the rust and pitting on an old engine to the area outside of the seal. In those cases a narrower seal can be used to get to clean undamaged area behind the original seal. I would still send it out. Some parts may be able to be salvaged if a core crank can be found.

I rebuild Hodaka cranks and would not use the left side of that crank. The right side may be usable if it is not pitted or damaged. It would be more cost effective to find another crank half or crank for rebuilding.

I have a second crank and piston rod assembly. Is there markings which identify what Model it might be from? Since my bike, top end and bottom end are all from different models I'd like to know. Or are the cranks and rods from the 125 models all the same? ; D Victor

Can part# 992701 or 992702a be used in place of part # 942701 for the crank?

Just for reference to anyone that may know the answer, the 992701 and 992702A is shown on the Compatability Spreadsheet as being for models 01, 02, and 82.
