Checking cold or warm is up to you. I have no idea if the specs shown in the book were in fact predicated on warm engine, but since the instruction say warm it up first, I would assume you need to check warm. But if it is in spec cold it will be also when warm.
Throttle open otherwise it has a hard time sucking in enough air to pump up the gauge. Try it both ways. You will see the difference. Doesn't matter two stroke or four.
