Re: Repacking wheel bearings

I removed the bearings from both wheels today. Enough heat - yes, that's the key. I'm going to go ahead and install new bearings after I finish cleaning up the rims and spokes. Thanks for the great advice.

Re: Hodaka and PABATCO

In 1968 I got a quote for an Ace 90 wide-ratio gear set kit from a distributor that was selling me parts at dealer cost. The wide-ratio set was list $62.51 less 40% discount. I sent my deposit one month later (remember doing business by COD?). Alas, my check was returned as the distributor had just ...

Repacking wheel bearings

I'd like to repack the wheel bearings on my Wombat. 40-year old grease..... The bearings are good. Is it possible to remove the bearings per the manual without damaging them? The first bearing gets tapped on the inner race because the spacer is in the way. Do they tap out without much force when the...

Re: More History -- Ace90

Both appear to be 125 GS models, probably different years and with various updates.

I'm thinking that unless there's a Strictly Zundapp out there, those fellows are leading a challenging life.

Re: More History -- Ace90

From what I can tell it appears the fellow is riding a 125 GS from the '70s. In the '70s Zündapp went to a downtube frame. They are mighty cool (both literally and figuratively) with that massively finned cylinder and sunburst head. With the 5-speed transmission they were well suited for off-road pe...

Re: More History -- Ace90

The late Joe Parkhurst of Cycle World fame had a 1967 Zündapp 125 ISDT replica hanging from the ceiling in his living room. Growing up with Hodakas in the late '60s, the Zündapp ISDT was one of my dreambikes. http://www.budanddaveekins.com/stories-photos/1967-125-ISDT-Replica.cfm Parkhurst Zundapp.j...

Re: Tool Kit Cover Help

Spring is inside the toolbox and fastened on the outside. Holes are small so you may need a new spring so you can curl the ends after inserting through the holes. The ends of the old spring may snap off if you try to straighten them.

Bad condensers will act up when they get hot. After a cool down, you are on your way again until it again gets hot. And so on.

Re: Larger Carb

I would second olddogs suggestion of clogged pilot jet. A major cause of no idle. I had a Honda Spree 50cc that would not idle. The pilot jet was clogged. It was a very tiny jet. I pulled a bristle out of a fine brass wire brush and carefully cleaned it out. Had a piece of carbon or something in it....

As you can see on this picture of my new Wombat 94A just after I bought it, the air filter was a matte black. Other items matte black were the turn signal indicator and the speedo body. The headlight and mounts, chainguard, battery box and frame were the glossy black.

Are you putting on the clear after the decal? I've seen cans of satin clear that may work well.

I need to refinish a Wombat cover which is a satin or flat black.

Re: Road Toad Regulator on Wombat

Thanks for the info. The used regulators you see are always pretty clean so I figured they were up and out of the weather. I thought about putting it in back of the rectifier, but it would be fairly tight even if a bracket could be fashioned. A picture of your setup would be great when you get a cha...

Road Toad Regulator on Wombat

I would like to replace the current limiter on my Wombat 94A with a Road Toad regulator. I've seen rlkarren's schematic and it is straightforward. The Wombat current limiter mounts on the right side of the battery box below the turn signal flasher. Where is the regulator mounted on a Road Toad? Base...

Wombat Workshop Manual

Is the Official Wombat Workshop Manual (covering the 94, 94A and Combat) a complete standalone manual covering the entire bike or is it a supplement to the earlier Ace 90 manual?

Thanks.

Re: Combat Wombat Paint

Rustoleum has a line of camouflage spray paints. One of them is 'Army Green'. You would have to try it out and see if it looks close enough to the shade Hodaka used.

Cheap, anyway, about $4 at Home Depot.

Re: Can you fix a tank leak ?

My Wombat tank developed quite a bit of rust inside and I sealed it about 20 years ago. It still looks great inside today. I used a clear sealer from Bill Hirsch, an automotive restoration supplier. I believe it was a moisture-cure urethane. As mentioned, the key is cleaning the tank first and derus...

On the spanner wrench - I just bought an adjustable steering stem wrench. It fits both top and bottom steering stem nuts. Fits the notches perfectly. Adjusts like a crescent wrench.
