Re: Steering Stem Ball Bearings model 98

One trick I learned is too late to help you, but may help others. When you get ready to pull the triple trees, place a large tote on the floor with a couple shop towels spread in the bottom under the stem area. Those bottom bearing are usually dry as popcorn and bounce just as high as soon as you lo...

Re: Steering Stem Ball Bearings model 98

Off by 1. Its 25 small on top and 23 big on bottom.

Clean the steering head races and put the bearings back in with real sticky grease on the race surface.Slide the stem back up without hitting the sides.

I had Roger Lippaitt, who is listed on this site as a recommended specialist, rebuild and weld up at least 3 or 4 Hodaka racing cranks over the last 5 years. He has good turn around time and stocks the parts.

Re: Resonator Volume 2 Issue 23 comments

Comments on the kill switches. I think the 73 and 74 Elsinore 125 and 250 used an almost identical kill switch. Wire length may be the only difference. I believe this is what's driving the cost and availability of these switches to exceed $200 if you can find one.

Re: hodaka

Curious minds would like to know. Can you elaborate on what type of damage starting a two stroke without a pipe or any type of exhaust attached to the cylinder can cause. I have also heard this can cause damage, but never got a full explanation of what type. Causes a too lean condition without backp...

combat wombat

Can a stock Combat Wombat ignition system with both the lighting coil blanks missing generate spark? Previous owner said bike had been running, but now it has no spark. Could it have run without them? What purpose do the solid blanks serve. If they are required, would 2 old Wombat lighting coils wor...

Re: Combat suspension upgrade

A 250 ED front wheel will work If you start with 03 front forks and swap some axles and bushings.Caution. The 250 and 03 axles are different, along with the bearings and spacers, Swapping an aluminum rim from a later CW, Super Combat or late Rat to the conical hub is a 2 hour project once you locate...

Re: B+ speedometer

FYI. The Toad speedo does not have the red dot high beam indicator light built in like the Wombats did. It is in the dash pod on the model 99. . i think the hole may be there but it is blacked out for Toad applications. They will interchange.

Re: Max rpm for a 250sl?

Your assumption is correct, IF the bike has the power to pull your weight and the weight of the bike. Bigger front and/or smaller rear sprockets would be the generic formula for more top end speed, but how high you would have to rev the engine in each gear to reach its top speed without it bogging d...

Re: 99 Toad Cylinder failure!?!?

I have seen this same failure on the intake side of an Alumiferic bonded, iron lined cylinder. It was on a Super Combat and went from the right rear cylinder stud passage to the lower right intake stud. It almost looked like the aluminum shrunk and separated or cracked during casting. I made one att...

Re: Compatablity of CW Barrel with SC Bottom End

You will find that carb options will be much more limited if you go with the CW cylinder unless you modify it for an 03 or SC reed manifold. I have even used a RT manifold as it is the same as the 03. They all use spigot mounted carbs, and the CW carb is flange mounted. So are most of the GEM reed c...

Re: Rear Carrier Rack for Combat Wombat

The model 97 Super Combat lacks the hanging dogs ear brackets found on the rear frame loop of the 94 and 95 frames. On the 95 frame they are used to hold the rear number plate bracket on. Nothing to hold the rack up on an SC without welding on a couple of these.

Re: 250sl rear sprocket

Found another notation that the front sprocket from a early 70s SL350 Honda would interchange. No proof, just and old note. One good trick for this kind of data is to find old motorcycle accessory catalogs at swap meets. Look up any hodaka parts listed and write down the part number. Go through the ...

Re: 250sl rear sprocket

I found a note i scribbled in the back of a 250 SL owners manual that a Yamaha TT500 rear sprocket from the late 70s may work on the 250. I must have jotted it down for some reason 40 years ago. Cant guarentee it will fit but it may be worth a look.

Re: Super Rat (98) piston

there are a couple of different types of hones and a couple differing opinions on honing. A flex hone has multiple abrasive balls on a wire cage and a stone hone has 3 fixed blades. The flex hone just de-glazes the bore and a stone hone can do a little straightening of the bore. They will both put a...

Re: The Road Toad Starts Today!

Those big C clips are tough. I found with a little file work on my needle nose pliers that they will fit the holes. They are a lot stronger/tougher than regular snap ring pliers and will give you the leverage you need to get these puppies out. I always heat the case bearing area up with a heat gun/p...

Re: Super Rat (98) piston

+20 or 20 identifies it as an over size piston. This allows the new owner to get replacement rings without measuring the piston. Somewhere in its past life it was worn to the point the existing piston was too loose in the bore or it had been seized and caused damage to the cylinder liner. Very commo...
