Re: SL175/03 Wombat mash-up

I looked at the possibilities of doing this a couple years ago trying to make a more powerful, lighter vintage racer. Seems to me I remember the drive sprocket location on the 175 being directly in line with the 03 swing arm pivot. Same for the 250 engine, which the 175 is designed from. It was goin...

I use an air gun while leaving it compressed. Its quick snap will usually grab it. You can then check your torque setting.

Re: M94 Lighting Lightning

It has been my experience that the early Wombats had issues with voltage regulation. Seems the lighting coil goes whacky sometimes and burns out the headlight and any other bulbs it can get to. I have used the Road Toad style voltage regulator to smooth out these voltage spikes. I believe you can us...

Re: 03 shocks

I believe the 03 shock is 14 1/4 long compared to the model 94s 13 1/2. The 03 uses a special upper and lower shock bolt and spacer on the left side to clear the chain and sprocket as the 03 shock if fatter at the bottom.

Re: Slow going off the line

I like to lay the bike over on its side using an old dismounted car tire for cushion. The procedure for clutch removal has been covered many times on this site, Leaving the engine in gives you some leverage as a loose engine on the bench can run around on you while you try and free up some of the cl...

Re: 69 Ace 100: Getting it started

It takes very little dirt or varnish flakes to plug up the pilot jet or passages. Start there. Make sure you use an in line fuel filter. Also could be an air leak, The pressure test will tell you. May be a base gasket but most likely a manifold to cylinder or carb to manifold air leak. Make sure top...

Re: Mike's Big Ride 2

You need to rename this guy Iron Butt Mike. I rode from northern Michigan to Hodaka Days 2015 on a Gl1500 Goldwing and it almost wore me out. We did about 400 miles a day with cruise control, stereo sound and a full fairing. :D He must be one tough dude. Maybe he left so early for Oregon so he could...

Re: Question for 250ED owners

I have a Super Combat cylinder with similar casting flaws. The aluminum looks as though it puddled and never stuck. You can see the iron liner through the blemishes. They are in various locations mostly near the intake track.

Restoring an 01 Dirt Squirt. Has about 7 thousands wear and would like to bring it back to life. Have some NOS 93 oversize pistons and can use the old one to give me hole dimensions. Wasn't sure about pin location, but it sounds like I am all set.

Re: 100 cc late models

Thanks. I must have been thinking since the reed valve wombat piston wont interchange with the piston port Wombat, neither would the 100cc engine. This makes things easier.

100 cc late models

Need a quick refresher on reed valve 100 cc Hodaka engines. Same 50 mm bore as the Ace, but what pistons will work. Only the 99, 01 or 02 pistons?? What about the model 98 piston? Rings?? Lots of experience with 125s, but not so much with the late model 100s.

Re: 69 Ace 100: Getting it started

With 80 PSI I would just go ahead and pull the head and cylinder. If you buy a head gasket so you can just look, a base gasket is just another couple bucks to look at everything. I have had 2 Hodakas come in this spring with compression issues. One had a very worn standard ring on a 40 over piston, ...

Yes. It only takes the 2 to make it run, if no other problems exist with the other ignition components behind the flywheel.

Re: Lost Key

Forget the mess of wires and the switch for now. Just make sure they are all unplugged. Any of them could be run to ground by a backyard mechanic. You need to eliminate all the variables. There should be 2 sets of wires coming up through the grommet in the case. One group goes to the switch, (the pl...

Re: Lost Key

No special tricks to get it running without the key. Just unplug the square plastic connector coming off the key switch assembly. Make sure the blue and black wires are making a good connection. The wires to the coil are a separate group from the ones going to the switch. No jumper wires needed. Don...

Re: Lost Key

I believe all the Ace 100s used a generic key. One key starts em all. No key needed if you just want to test for spark. Just unplug the wiring harness from the ignition switch to the magneto. The black and blue wires to the coil are the only ones necessary to run it. You wont have lights, and this a...

Re: replacement coil

Check wire connections first and make sure the plug cap is tight on the coil lead. The cap can come loose and cause loss of spark. They make 6 volt replacement coils and while not identical, they are inexpensive and are actually smaller and fit nice under the tank. I have used them on a number of re...

Re: Rotor/Flywheel Tool & Locked Up Motor

This K model motor is the most desirable one for a vintage race bike. They call them the Big Bearing model due to the mag side crank bearing being larger than the the Combat or Wombat. The left and right crank case bearings are less than 10 bucks and available at any auto parts store. Any Combat Wom...

Couple of things. If it came in a box, confirm the number of teeth on each gear, The simple parts diagram will list the proper tooth count for each gear. Watch the tooth count on the kick starter gear. They come in different tooth counts. Confirm your shim locations. there are a number of shims that...

Re: Rotor/Flywheel Tool & Locked Up Motor

You can remove the stator assembly plate from the engine with the rotor still on. You can then use a mid sized 3 arm gear puller to hook behind the rotor. I have done it many times when my rotor pulled went into hiding. To keep the 3 arms of the puller from slipping off, I just used a large hose cla...

Re: Mikuni carb and o-ring problem

Some of the early dt 125 and 175 Yamahas used this same type Mikuni carb. I have been able to walk in and buy the correct O ring over the counter at the local Yamaha dealer. The bowl should rock slightly when put it on the carb. A little grease on the o ring to keep it from tearing and use the bowl ...

Re: Fin dampers

A lot of bikes used a piece of foam rubber folded over the backbone under the tank. This caught some of the engine noise and muffled some of the vibration in the tanks tunnel area, keeping it from acting like a megaphone.
