Re: 98 Rat Clutch Freeplay Issue
I’m still getting minimal free play, maybe 3/64” using just a .003 spacer. If I use .08 it’s already locking up the free play. What else can I check? Would the wrong washer under the clutch nut do it? If the washer is too thick?

Ed. I double checked and measured the new style clutch plates. They are also 2.5mm. So I’m putting it back together now.

Re: Rider to Hodaka Days
Not as long as my drive Bob! It takes me almost 18 hours of drive time from Santa Fe to Athena! I drive 10 hours the first day and stop about an hour or so North of Salt Lake City! Then it’s another 7-8 hours from there thru Idaho and into Oregon. I usually make Boise by lunch time-ish.

98 Rat Clutch Freeplay Issue
Hi folks! I’m working on the free play on my 98 Suoer Rat. I’ve already rebuilt the clutch & it has the standard 95/97/98 clutch kit in it. I also blueprinted the clutch. But I don’t seem to be getting any free play with ANY shims behind the clutch disc! Usually, on a rebuilt clutch I find I nee...

Re: Model 98 KYB Shocks & pipe
Good news update! I still haven’t found all my transmission ‘inards’ for my 98 Rat. But, I was able to buy some of the missing parts from Terry and traded Alan Fonovan dome parts for the rest that was missing!!!
So now, I can finally rebuild my motor! More to come!!!

Re: Model 97/98 KYB Shocks
Got my pipe back from Get Dirty Dirt Bikes! David did a really good job on it. All the work done for $60! I think that was a score! He even found a small break in the seam which he welded shut. (Last pic). Before pics above, & here’s the after pics!

Re: Model 97/98 KYB Shocks
Progress report on my 98 Duper Rat! I was able to get the right shock together! It’s mounted on the bike! I’ve added the CDI box, the ignition coil, the front fender mount, and I’ve started building the motor. Front wheel just needs tire mounted, and I got a matching DID alloy rim in the mail from B...

Re: Model 97/98 KYB Shocks
New J hooks arrived late this afternoon! Tomorrow I can assemble the second shock. I’m still drilling out the forward shock bolt hole on the right side. Hoping I get done with that tomorrow as well. I prefer to use the forward shock mounts. Pics soon!

Re: Model 97/98 KYB Shocks
Dirty_rat. I made a spring depressor like the one Kelly shows in his videos! Works very well! I put one shock back together & started on the second when one of my J Hooks broke. Couldn’t find any long enough ones here in town, so I ordered from Amazon. They will arrive on Tuesday! Put the comple...

Model 98 KYB Shocks & pipe
Question about the 97/98 KYB shocks. I need to remove the springs to clean the inside surfaces. Is it just a matter of compressing the spring and sliding the top off? Or is there some other method for removing the springs? Thx.

Re: Project SL 175 Motocrosser
I started with a 175SL which was missing many parts! A pipe, tank, oil tank, airbox, spark arrester, speedo, still looking for a rear chrome rack and rear turn signals. But it’s coming along. I even found the Unobtainium OEM Skyway spark arrester for it! However, the pipe I purchased, although being...

I, too, have used the Shinko 244 on a few bikes. They are a fairly aggressive trials tire. But still are useful if you ride the streets to the dirt!

125 points gap
Just wanting to pass this along. After speaking with Danny Cooke. He advised me that the 125 Wombats tend to want their points gapped at .010-.012, rather than at .013-.015. Danny indicated that the more advanced timing makes the motor harder to start & keep running. I had 2 Wombats which I was ...

Actually, I’ve slowed down a LOT more. Especially in the Winter, because I don’t have heat in the garage. There is little desire to work outside when it’s well below 40*F!

Re: Shifting Help!!!
Ed, I figured it out today. The foot change ratchet plunger spring washer fell out when I was putting things back together. So the plunger spring wasn’t making the plunger maintain pressure against the ratchet. I found another washer and installed it between the spring & the zurk fitting. That w...

Re: Shifting Help!!!
Captain Ed & OldDogs! Thanks for the guidance. I’ve been going “sl o w e r” and taking my time. The first issue of the gear slippage is corrected. The bike was delivered today! Thank God, I can finally move on! Now I have my Blue Wombat. This one won’t shift at all, won’t even go into gear. Firs...

Re: Shifting Help!!!
Dirty_rat, I have a machinist I prefer to use. I’m not in favor of spending what they charge. My machinist will charge $67 USD to repair this cover and put a new bushing on it! He lives close to Alan and I just mail it to Alan & Alan mails it back. This one had already been sent off. Putting the...

Shifting Help!!!
I’ve been working on a 94 Wombat. I thought I had this bike all finished. Took it out for a test ride around the neighborhood. 1st & 2nd gear seem to work fine. However in 3rd & 4th gear, there was an intermittent but repeating slippage as I rode down the street. I took the motor back out, i...

Re: Road Toad Modifications
I remember drilling 2 holes in the front of the piston, to add an oil passage which would lube the exhaust bridge. It was a 1/16” drill bit. I don’t remember the distances. If you need them I can ask Danny Cooke for the measurements. According to the Road Toad specs, your supposed to relieve the exh...
