Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

OK. I've been reading all of this! I am having trouble finding the 11 o'clock mark on the casing. So, is it better to set the gap with the magneto cover on or off? I can see things better with it off but I am not sure how to accomplish this without the cam lobe on the cover. Or should I do it with t...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

Not getting spark again. I have double checked the previous wires which were not connected correctly. Everything connected. I am going to check the condenser and make sure all 3 wires are soldered and connected. Still not sure on the points. Hoping my son in law the mechanic can assist me with the p...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

OK. After fighting with it for quite awhile, I think I got the gap set on the points to .013. I am going to mix a new batch of premix. The 2 stroke oil I have is Castor 927. It says mixing ratios from 1:20 to 1:60. So, since issues have been fouling the plug, And I think I mixed last time around 1:2...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

Ok. I got the new condenser in, being sure no wire or solder makes contact with the outer casing of the condenser. I have installed the new points, but I am having difficulty getting the gap to open. At first, because of the photo in the manual, I thought I had to gap them with the magneto cover off...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

I understood that was tha condenser's funtion. I think I have it on but need to check my solder to make sure it isn't contacting the condenser case. I have to go back to the hospital now. My wife has been there all day with my daughter & her newborn! I was there earlier but came home when they a...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

OK. Look at this photo! I think I found the answer to my starting problems! Though there is some flare in the picture, you can see the condenser connectors are melted together. When I was pulling the fly wheel, it wasn't as tight as I expected it to be. I suspect the flywheel may have been wobbling ...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

Greg. Thanks for all the info. Taking it one step at a time. I will say it's strange to me that a condenser failure will still allow the bike to run. I had a Kawaski F6 125 when I was younger. The condenser failed on me twice. Both times, the bike would not start until the condenser was replaced. It...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

Thanks Ed. Yes, I suspect the condenser may have failed. I'll be checking my mailbox again today to see if it came in. I suspect the condenser failed and it's why I am getting the continual no start issue. Since I have to pull the magneto, I figured I would put new points as well. I have looked at t...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

Not true Greg. As I stated before, after reassembly, I started the bike. It idled cold, with the choke off right away. I also rode the bike around the block and was 3/4 of the way back to the house when it quit running. Pushed it home, let it sit in the garage over night and it started again the fol...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

Ossa9. I was always meaning the plunger was down. Sorry for any confusion. When the lever is down, the plunger is up. When the lever is up the plunger is down. Just depends on what you're talking about or looking at. So in your terms, I was starting it with the lever up, choke NOT engaged. As I am s...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

I bought 2 new plugs. A new one is in it right now. Unless you're telling me that cranking the bike will flip a new plug, I don't think it is. If you say change it again, I will. But I do not think it has had the opportunity to be fouled just from attempting to start the bike. If this is a wrong ass...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

Greg. I'm using a Castor oil based oil an I think I mixed it around 24-28 to 1. The cap on the gas tank said to go 20:1 but the guys at the local shop who gave me the oil for free said I'd be better off not mixing it 20:1. I appear to be getting some possible problems with spark. It doesn't look lik...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

Ed. The bike is not starting at all now. I am beginning to think that maybe the condenser failed? I did ride it before trying all this effort to rejet the carb. It started cold, without the choke. I went around the block, maybe 1/4 mile and she died on me. I couldn't get her to start again and had t...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

No Tom. I wasn't aware. I watched the video and will see about doing it while I wait for parts to come in. I wish I had known to do this before I sandblasted and engine painted the whole exhaust! But one more can of engine paint isn't that costly. And I bought new springs, which were a pain in the A...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

Greg. I was always starting it with the plunger in the down position. This was my biggest indicator that it was too rich. If it starts not choked when cold and dies when it warms up, that to me says that the carb is set too rich for my elevation. But now, she is not starting at all again. I have kic...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

OK Ed. I have the pilot jet reduced from the 40 that was in there to a 30, which was what came with this carb initially according to the schematics. Carb float tab is at approx. 17mm and appears to be level and square with the base of the gasket surface and not putting pressure on the needle. Carb i...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

Ed. So you know, I changed the pilot jet to 30 and I dropped the main jet from 140 to 100. I have the air screw at one full turn open and the idle screw at 1.5 turns. I'm still using the 2.5 slide and the same 4E1 needle I posted earlier with the clip in the #2 position. It almost starts but not qui...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

Well, it doesn't look exactly like either one! It does have the brass tube inside where the needle drops down but it appears to be a bit shorter. And the air hole (for the choke?) on the intake collar is not at 12 o'clock like in your picture. It's more like at 2:30 in position. Also mine has the ch...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

So this is a VM2400 carb. This chart doesn't say anything about the pilot jet. Should I assume still a 25 pilot jet and change the main to a 170 or should I assume the 140 was sea level and go down to the 100 main? These figures don't tell me enough because nothing on this bike motor is original to ...

Thanks Ed! I think it's a VM2400 from a model 93 Ace 100 Super Rat. The picture for this model matches up and it has the same shape bowl gasket too. At least now I know what bowl gaskets to order!!! ; D Victor

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

OK. Main jets. I have identified that I have a 140 now in the carb's banjo bolt. I also have the following identified additional mains I can put in. A 420, a 240, I have 5, 200's, a 195, 2, 190's, a 180, a 100 & a 95. That is 13 of the 42 jets I have. The rest have either no markings at all and ...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

OK. I looked at the Model 93 Ace 100 schematics as Paul earlier said it looks like that one. It appears to match my carb, and the Model 93 has a VM2400 carb. Does the VM2400 carb have a slide which measures 27-27.5mm? The banjo bolt extra I found in my box, still in the original cardboard & shri...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

Oh as a reference point, this is the tackle box I got full of carb parts. It is two sided and has more parts than just for this carb. I am willing to part with any of the parts I have in here which do not fit my carb. I have slides. Choke assemblies, needles, floats and float hangers, bowl gaskets, ...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

And I was wrong about not having any extra main jets. It appears I have in excess of 30 in various sizes (see attached photo). I also have an extra banjo bolt, still in the shrink wrap, a VM24/286 is what it's labeled. And I have 2 additional slides, in addition to the 2.5 I posted in the pics. I ha...

Re: Gears Not Engaging!!!

Paul et al. There is no number stamped on the head of the banjo bolt. It's cut for a slotted screw driver. But, if you go back to the post with the photos, the main is labeled 140. If you open the picture & zoom in, it becomes easier to see. Same with the pilot jet being 40. The carb slide measu...
