Re: 71 Super Rat Road Kit?

You could post pictures so we can see what you have. But with the high degree of interchangeability, it could be someone just put some 100B parts on it.

Re: 100 B forks

I agree with Max. My 100B forks were traded years back for 93 forks, which I never had problems with, and then I traded them out last year for forks that could be 100B or 93A, no telling. No need to change the top clamp, and if the ridge is a bother for you, file it out. Just about any 30mm forks wi...

Pretty sure that E-clip isn't intended to withstand as much side load as the control rod exerts. Still, it is in there and who knows how long it has been working.

Re: Model 95 new piston rings and bore

Checking cold or warm is up to you. I have no idea if the specs shown in the book were in fact predicated on warm engine, but since the instruction say warm it up first, I would assume you need to check warm. But if it is in spec cold it will be also when warm. Throttle open otherwise it has a hard ...

Re: Mikuni Carb Float Level Adjustment

I've always wondered how accurately the float maintains the fuel level while the bike is being hammered around a motocross track. Brian It doesn't, which is why float level need only be approximately correct for how you ride. It needs to be high enough to supply a relatively unfrothed supply of fue...

Re: Model 95 new piston rings and bore

Not an official source I suppose, but my Clymers manual from 1980 suggests compression should be from 155 to 170 psi. Also suggested is the old trick of putting a squirt of motor oil in the spark hole and testing again if the reading appears to be low. What this does is help to seal pressure bypass ...

Re: Model 95 new piston rings and bore

Couple of observations for what they are worth: Wiseco pistons these days are forged, not cast, and the design for their modern pistons is targeted at current production motorcycles, all of which are water cooled. Forged pistons require different clearances than do cast pistons due to metal density ...

I agree, but I would ask first why you intend to rebuild. Is it leaking? Is something not quite right about the way it feels? The fact that is has sat around for years seems to be offset by your having used it for commuting this year. Clearly it has made the leap to the 21st century very well. I wou...

Re: Model 95 new piston rings and bore

I have always used 0.004" on the 125 ring, both Webco and Hodaka.

Guess I missed the "per inch of bore" part of what you said. I would think that to be too wide.

Re: Model 95 new piston rings and bore

Rich, I am only repeating what is shown in the Hodaka spec sheet for the CW. Expansion of rings is a function of several things, from ring style to mass to metalurgy to riding style. I believe that regardless of your build target, no one wants a ring to expand to the point of end contact. What that ...

Re: Model 95 new piston rings and bore

Original specs as shown on the website: Piston skirt clearance 0.003" Ring gap 0.004 to 0.012" This is assuming using stock Hodaka piston. Skirt clearance is a bit broad by modern standards, and may have been driven by the oils then in use. Ed's suggestions sound right. 40 to 1 is a bit le...

Re: Spark help

As long as ignition wires and such are still connected, you will not get infinite resistance with points open. Resistance changes but not from zero to infinity. Easier to see with an analog meter where needle swings but just listen for a tone change on your beeper. Chasing gremlins is tedious. It co...

Re: Wombat Ignition Timing

The gap changes with time due to wear, and changes every time you replace points due to tolerance differences, so no matter what Harry said, setting point gap doesn't set timing, it only gets you running. If that's close enough for you, go for it. And, last time I checked, my flywheel marks coincide...

Re: Wombat Ignition Timing

Setting timing by point gap only sets only approximate timing. That's why the spec is anywhere between 0.012 and 0.015, yet timing is correct at only one point. So which gap is correct, you ask? Whichever gap achieves correct timing is the correct gap. If approximate is good enough for you, its fine...

Re: Model 95 replacement piston

0.007" clearance would yield a noisy piston and probably low compression. I have one with 0.008" and while it runs, it is way off its peak. I believe clearances do differ some as between cast versus forged pistons. A manufacturers recommended clearance is a broad guess at correct clearance...

Re: Wombat Ignition Timing

Yes he did, and I can't find one like it anywhere. Even with that light it took me ten minutes to zero in the timing. I think it might have been quicker to use a multimeter and set the point break statically. What the light shows is running timing, which takes into account mass in motion, electrical...

Re: Model 95 replacement piston

56mm = 2.2047244" but that is assuming that when the factory states bore is 56mm that it is EXACTLY 56mm. Factory specs stated in inches is 2.20" which is correct if only taken to two decimals. But if standard bore is fractionally larger or smaller than 56mm, making decimal references more...

Re: Model 95 replacement piston

Standard bore is 2.20" (56mm). Doesn't sound like the bore is worn out, and it isn't 20 over. Without seeing it, it sounds more like the piston and ring are worn. Assuming your measurements are correct, replace piston and ring with standard units. Piston clearance can be 0.004" and be cons...

Re: Wombat Ignition Timing

To answer the question asked, it is adjustable although not while running, and there is no advance curve. Timing is static. 2.4mm would be a target if you set timing with a dial indicator. Otherwise set the points to break open when the reference mark on the flywheel is aligned with the right hand r...
