Re: Road Toad shock interchangeability

Some of the Hodaka shocks may be technically rebuildable, but at this remove, where would one find rebuild components? I don't think Hodaka ever offered any, and I don't find any now. As for how they compare to current aftermarket shocks, I am not surprised to find that current equipment is better. ...

Original Super Combat shocks are, at this point, 41 years old. Do they still work?

Re: Plastic Tank Repair!

Most product containers these days are marked as to their material for recycle purposes. Gas tanks, not so much. If in doubt, you can always contact the manufacturer and ask, but I am going to guess they are either high density poly or low density poly, and I would lean toward high density, or HDPE....

Re: Plastic Tank Repair!

Probably. If you can identify what type of plastic is used, such as HDPE, you can use anything made of the same stuff from milk jugs to oil cans.

You can weld it yourself with a soldering iron and plastic filler. I have used zip ties as filler. Glue won't work.

Re: Hodaka 94A carb and wiring

The only 125 wiring diagram I can find shows a current limiter in circuit in addition to the rectifier. That would explain a 9V output in the book and a 30V output without one. Take out the 9V replace with a 12V, use a 10A fuse, and I suppose you could fire a 100W lamp.

Rick,

If I understand your question, the answer is a rich running bike that didn't used to run rich.

Re: Hodaka 94A carb and wiring

Ed, I don't have an answer. I do understand electrical circuits sufficient for purposes of a bike. I would have to guess at the answer, but as the book value was limited to 9V, I would say either the Japanese lied about the potential way back when and no one knew, cared, or found out, or you have an...

Re: Flooding Carb

A brass float that has fuel inside it rarely leaks bubbles no matter how deep you put it under water. The question is not whether it bubbles, but whether you can hear something sloshing around inside. If it has a liquid inside you can bet it is gasoline. Simply soldering the hole isn't going to work...

Re: Hodaka 94A carb and wiring

I would posit that if the system can produce no more than 9V it won't matter what kind of a 12V regulator you use because you will never hit the limit, which on a 12V system would be somewhere north of 14V.

Re: Hand on helmet

The last part of the question was whether not using the clutch will spray parts about. Probably not but it is really hard on the ball receiver and springs and when done from a standing start will shorten service life a lot. But, if you have to have two hands on the bars to control launch, just use t...

Re: Hodaka 94A carb and wiring

I wasn't aware the Wombat lighting coils produced enough voltage to maintain a 12V battery. Thought the output was somewhere near 8V AC. Book says "under 9V at 8,000 rpm." That won't support a 12V system.

Re: Flooding Carb

You can verify that the float valve is leaking by taking the bowl off and holding the float up by hand. When reasonable pressure does not stop the weepage you will have isolated the problem. Remove the parts and inspect closely. If light pitting or a wear groove is all you see, no cracks, you can so...

Max is right, what you described might be valid for a step through Honda 50 from 1966 with a semi automatic shift feature, but not for a Hodaka. If you want to find out what happens, try it, just have it pointed in a safe direction.

Overflow venting. You can either put lengths of small tubing on these and run the tubing down and out so overflow doesn't flow over you paint work, or ignore them.

Re: dirt squit crankcase oil capacity

If there are discernible differences between brands of modern oil within a given classification, it would take an engineer and a test lab to identify them. Without test data, I would not expect temperature differences as between two otherwise identical oils, but different brands. I don't believe syn...

Re: correct kick start lever installation

The original screws, so I hear, were JIS. Whether screws available these days are JIS or Phillips is anyone's guess, but I would guess Phillips, not JIS, the differences being largely esoteric. I have never seen JIS screws at the hardware or bike shop, and rarely see original, factory screws on any ...

Re: How to DIY Coilover install ?!

I guess the original question will need clarification. While my off road race car has coilovers, I never considered a motorcycle shock with a coil to be a coilover, but I guess they are. So, are we asking how to get the coil spring on or off the shock? Would need to know which brand you have. Some d...

Re: Un-charted serial number -- 1970 Hodaka Ace 100 (?)

Rick, your photo of the "A" is a "B" exactly as mine came. The difference in fenders between B and B+ was that B was tight to the tire. The B+ had the high fender. The B and B+ had 19" front wheel, the Ace100 a 17" wheel. If there was an A that preceded the B I would th...

Re: Un-charted serial number -- 1970 Hodaka Ace 100 (?)

Whether or not there was a model A, that is not the genesis of the gap in the record. Mine is not on the chart, and it is a model B. I have all the original documents including bill of sale and warranty card, all marked as a B. I have no idea why the chart now shows a gap. It did not used to do so, ...

Re: 71 Super Rat Road Kit?

I don't recognize the holes drilled in the rear fender. From very old recollection, I would have thought that a stock 100B fender would have three holes in a triangle, two for bolts, one for wire harness. So the fender is probably the original Rat fender that someone drilled. The headlight was just ...

Yours in an Ace 100B. I also have one just a few months newer that is not on the chart, but used to be. The chart has gone through several revisions, the most recent of which was attendant to the publication of a book on the history of the Hodaka. In the making of this book and its chart, a great de...
