Re: Swinging arm thread.

Excellent Dal. We're starting to get a decent collection. I just unearthed a blue swing arm which I hope came off a Super Combat or painted tank Rat. I don't think it is off an SL250. Now we need a craftsman-level welder and some input from a pro regarding the best length to add.

Hodaka Heavy Industries of Nagoya, Japan? I think Fuji Heavy Industries made Hodaka motors too.

Re: Shifter mechanism in side cover

Hey, along these lines, I have trouble getting the grease gun off the zerk. Are the zerks that come as standard on Hodies slightly larger than the usual? I actually fractured a zerk just trying to remove the grease gun.

I'm going to check it out, Victor. Unfortunately, it was the estate sale of the man who built the bike for his daughter where I got the bike. He's gone.

Great report. One of my racing buddies custom blends his racing oils. Top secret stuff he'll take to his grave to hear him tell it. I'm going to hip him to this report and watch his facial expressions. Nice work. Thank you.

Re: Cool 01 back story and related questions.

Thank you Dale. That's just what I needed to know. Interestingly, there are about a million dead-ended wires in the headlight bucket. I'm starting to wonder if the previous owner retrofitted a Road Toad harness and there are turn signal leads, etc. included. This is going to require a bit of sorting...

Thanks fellas. Great info Dale. If I'm reading you right, any point on the AC hot lead between the magneto and secondary coil will do for VR positioning?

Great Dale. Thanks! That's just what I was hoping to learn. You are correct - direct system off the mag and all 6 volt lamps. Even without the battery, do I need to fuse the circuit?

Cool 01 back story and related questions.

So, this ultrasweet 01 Squirt I've been shamelessly bragging about recently came with a top-secret bonus. Its plated! Off-road only head tag and all. I have the title and last registration in hand. Amazing. It was a gift from a local dirt bike speed shop legend to his daughter who in turn sold it to...

Exactly. You really end up with a remarkably tune-able fork.

Re: Hodaka 30mm Fork Mod

Yes. Excellent and fairly simple mod for race bikes. The forks are more "tuneable" with traditional fork oil/preload spacers and thus more responsive to the terrain as a result of more control of damping and a bit more travel. I would say the real benefit is more due to the improved dampin...

Re: Swinging arm thread.

Just from memory, I know I have several of those and would be willing to donate them to the cause if there is any interest. I believe the test swinging arms would be of most value to those interested in setting up a bike for racing or at least more heavy-duty trailing. By my way of thinking, if I wr...

Re: Swinging arm thread.

For sure. I have a pumped up toaster tank Super Rat that was nearly unraceable until I got the swinging arm extended. I couldn't keep the front wheel on the ground unless I was practically sitting on the tank. The extension really makes a difference.

Swinging arm thread.

A cool idea occurred to me after reading the recent rear suspension thread posted by Dal Aymond. I would be willing to donate a swinging arm if anyone with legit welding skills would be willing to extend and reinforce it properly. I'd even throw in a chain. Then, the kit could be passed around among...

Re: Combat Wombat Rear Suspension Travel

I will play devils advocate and trumpet the handling improvements with a bit of swinging arm extension based on before/after experience. The two inches of additional length doesn't seem like that big a deal, but I'm here to tell you the handling improvements on an MX course are significant. Both my ...

I dig, Captain. I know some folks refer to a bungled Philips head as "stripped".

Re: What is the prefered method to repair a striped case screw?

Hmmm...what is stripped, the end of the screw where the screw driver inserts or the hole where the screw threads into the crank case? From the title, it sounds as if the screw is the issue and not the mounting bung on the crank case.

Re: What is the prefered method to repair a striped case screw?

With few exceptions, I have been able to get stripped Philips head screws out using an easy-out style removal tool. Otherwise, just drill off the head and remove the shaft of the screw with a vice grip once you've removed the cover. Always use an impact driver to remove those case screws or you'll s...

Re: What kind of hub is this?

Thank you, Pop. That was driving me crazy. I forgot about the leading axle feature. Now I'm sure about the YZ front end on the XL. I put it on for more travel for the MX sections on the hare scrambles courses. The jumps were getting bigger. Had that bike for about six months, blew up the motor, had ...
