I don't have any first hand knowledge but my observations match yours. Maybe a different steel or plating?

Re: tourqe specs
Hydraulic Jack, Perfection is a goal desired but not always achieved. I have found it almost impossible to get a "perfect" seal at the spark plug threads. New plug, new plug seal washer, tighten plug, etc. The leak is very small but still there. Maybe a little anti-sieze applied to the thr...

Re: tourqe specs
I have pressure test a few Hodaka engines and developed processes that work for me. The more engines you pressure test the more you learn where the common air leaks are. On the head bolt retorque I do not loosen but simply retorque. Most of the time the bolt will rotate 1/8 to 1/4 turn. I am also ca...

JackM,
Looks like it has been machined and the outer / squish area machined. It would run but might be more subject to detonation.

JackM, I have attached a picture of a super combat cylinder head. Yours looks like it was damaged and a repair attempted. Hard to tell what is going on the outer edge of the combustion chamber. Checked your location on the map and I am headed that way this weekend to visit my mom in Benson. You are not to far away for me to detour a bit and assist. What do you think?

Hey ED, Quibbling just a teensy bit . . . but it looks to me like the window in the piston has been enlarged. :-) Ed Piston came out of an engine that was restored for one of our forum members. You know I have seen factory combat wombat pistons in three versions. One with very narrow width, this one...

Re: Super Rat Model 98 Modification
JackM, That is definitely a super combat cylinder and you cannot go back to a super rat mdl 98 cylinder. At least not with the engine cases you have. The cylinder spigot on a model 98 super rat is much smaller than the model 97 super combat. Either someone has bored your cases for the super combat c...

Re: carb reed help
Bronco, The two holes drilled in the upper part of the intake tract is one step of modifying a combat wombat for a reed valve. With these two holes "open" you can not go back to a piston port arrangement. However, you plug those holes and then go back to piston port if desired. Personally ...

Re: Super Rat Model 98 Modification
Jack, None of the Hodaka cylinders came from the factory plated. All were either solid cast iron or aluminum with cast iron liner. Plating the cylinder is a modification that is done though. What size is you bore? If indeed plated might be able to get under the plating and bore to next over size. Th...

Re: carb reed help
All good advise. But....I am beginning to question the traditional wisdom of drilling holes through the victory port to connect directly to the intake passage on the combat wombat cylinder. Seems to me with the horizontal slot at the top of the combat wombat piston and the matching blind victory por...

Hodaka Internal Rotor Point Ignition
I removed this ignition from a combat wombat engine a good bit ago. Just getting around to cleaning up, testing and restoring. This is the ONLY INTERNAL ROTOR point ignition I have ever seen on any Hodaka. The point gap can be set and then the entire stator rotated to fine tune timing. Did some rese...

Clarence, The 59 tooth gears are for the mdl 93b super rat, 95 combat wombat, 97 super combat and 98 super rat. The top left 59 tooth gear with the rivets was a redesign aimed at the 97 super combat and 98 super rat. There are rubber cushions internally on the rivets to absorb sudden shock loads and...

Re: Next Mod for the 94A?
Max /Clarence, The new production Wiseco piston box lists the recommended piston to bore clearance just under .002 inch. My experience with aluminum Hodaka cylinders says it should be .0025 to .003 inch. Cast iron cylinders .003 to .0035 inch. Also keep in mind when checking piston to bore clearance...

Re: '72 Wombat (94) Stopped on me twice
Bevman, Based on the pictures of your piston, I have to wonder if the piston to bore clearance is to small. Cast iron cylinders with stock Hodaka brand pistons require more clearance than you would think. Hodaka mdl 94 / 94a piston to bore clearance specs out at .004 inch. Even with a new piston don...

And one additional tid bit to head bolt torque. Always re-check torque after a couple of heat cycles. Most head bolts will be a bit looser after a bit of run time.

Hey Jack, I have not used the generic coils you mention but I can comment on the generic coil single + wire issue...at least as it relates to Hodaka point ignitions. Most factory Hodaka point ignitions have two wires going to the coil. One black / positive. One blue / negative. The Hodaka blue negat...

Looks like dirt / debris to me also. Maybe the cylinder was not throughly clean after boring / honing? I have found globs of abrasive mixed with honing oil stuck inside port openings that required getting at with a brush and detergent to remove. Can be easily missed since it is about the same color ...
