Re: My 03 Wombat lives!!..well maybe soon.

Wonder exactly what has to be done to the Boyesen reed #613 to fit the stock Hodaka reed cage? Want to share that Danny? bchappy, The bottom reed is a little wider and needs to be trimmed. Also, center to center distance between the screw holes is sometimes a little short. I start by installing the...

Re: My 03 Wombat lives!!..well maybe soon.

Thanks. Good points. Again just curious what are the dual stage reeds made out of? Last I thought too much about reeds they were steel and the trick thing to do was replace them with plastic or maybe it was fiberglass - the idea being if the steel broke it lunched the engine and the others wouldn't...

Re: My 03 Wombat lives!!..well maybe soon.

Danny - why do you think the difference in reeds - carbon vs steel/plastic?? Dual Stage made a difference in 4 stroking??? Just curious. LBM It was just observation. Changed to the 2 stage reeds and mixture was not as rich at and just off idle....with no other changes. To be fair, some tuning was r...

Re: Soldering to the condenser - a better way?

Hi Danny Cooke! I have been watching this thread with great interest as I'm having an issue with my 100B+. Its been running poorly from about 1/8 throttle up. 'four stroking' I think .... I thought it was a tuning issue, but all adjustments have had no impact. I pulled the stator plate and there ap...

Re: Soldering to the condenser - a better way?

Spudman, Hodaka condenser capacitance spec is .25 to .27 mf plus or minus 10 %.....at least for the 125's. In researching this issue I found there are a lot of point ignition similarities between other brands of this time period. Every condenser I could find specs for were .25 mf for single cylinder...

Re: Soldering to the condenser - a better way?

I'll have to ask around to see if anyone I know has one of the old soldering irons, Ed. It sure sounds like a better & quicker way to go. I seem to remember also seeing a thread somewhere regarding the relocation of the condenser...up under the tank maybe? It looks like at least some of the wir...

Re: My 03 Wombat lives!!..well maybe soon.

Vic, I will get to the 175 one day. So today I fit some dual stage reeds and re-tuned. Installed the original 45 pilot jet and retuned from there. Still rich at idle and just above but not as rich as with the carbon fiber reeds. Dropped pilot back to 35 and adjusted air screw. Test drove and engine ...

Re: Carb cleaning...a chemical carb dip or the Hornady Hot Tub?

OK, on Max's "Day One Project" the carb has been all rebuilt but the outside looks drab. Any ideas for that new look? Max This method of carb refinishing is kind of like using a hammer. Works well when used properly. But if care is not exercised, much damage can be done. I have used extra...

Re: Carb cleaning...a chemical carb dip or the Hornady Hot Tub?

I shoot and reload also but don't have an ultra sonic cleaner...yet. Still vibratory tumbling my brass and small motorcycle parts in ground walnut hulls. Your sonic cleaner should be great to clean carbs...not sure what cleaner to use though. You could run a test piece...old carb body etc. for test....

Ok so here are pictures of the bike. Everything works as it should and a bit more tuning to do. Going to go to a different reed and see how the bike responds.

I use a thinner 5mm seal rather than the original 7 mm seal. No issues when installed flush.

Re: My 03 Wombat lives!!..well maybe soon.

Ok, now it is official. Started the 03 yesterday and put 12 miles on the bike. Mostly heat cool cycles and tuning. Engine is bone stock except for .020 bore, and a set of Rich's carbon fiber reeds. I did drill the oil feed passage for the left crank bearing in case pre-mix was later desired. Running...

My 03 Wombat lives!!..well maybe soon.

Well may be not quite ready to take a spin yet. Completed the engine and installed it in the frame today. The plan is to address all the mechanicals and sell the bike to fund another project. This is an unmolested 03 with title. Will make a perfect candidate for a full restoration. Will post more as...

Re: Relocating Condenser

Below is the condenser I sourced for this task. As you can see it has double wiring connectors that allow you to just plug it in directly with out any modifications to the original Hodaka wiring harness. Tees in to the black coil wire. I did have to change the connectors on this condenser....they we...

Re: Relieving the exhaust port bridge - a 41 year old mystery SOLVED?

Max, I am using a Wiseco piston on a non Hodaka project with bridged exhaust and the instructions detail the task. Two holes centered on the exhaust bridge .060 - .090 inch diameter starting .300 inch below the bottom ring , .375 inch between the two holes. That should give you a good idea of the pr...

I drill the small holes in all pistons that fit engines with exhaust port bridges. This is also a Wiseco recommendation.

I use these for a lot of different tasks. The medium grit should work well. You can shape stones on your grinder and give it a little radius at the end.

Relocating Condenser

This subject has been mentioned lately and some questions have been posted. Since I am relocating the condenser on my 03 Wombat thought some might like to see how this is done. Modification to the stator assembly will be covered today. In the process of restoring my 03 engine so it may be a few days...

Re: Condenser Wiring

Kit, Simply solder together all the wires going to the original condenser, insulate and tuck out of the way of any moving parts. Basically you are simply teeing in the new condenser to the black wire going to the coil. The condenser grounds at the coil mount bolt. Come to think of it, I might sugges...

Re: Condenser Wiring

Kit, The soldered connection works as long as care is exercised. Good solder technique and no excess heat to condenser. That said, I have used a remote condenser from a 1976 Honda mr250 that makes servicing easier. Also may be a little more reliable. This condenser is bolted to the ignition coil und...
