Re: road toad oil injection

OK. Here is the information I said I'd send. I sure hope the photo link works! Below are two photos (melded into one). The left photo shows 1 cup (8 fluid ounces) of water in a glass. The right photo shows the same glass minus a little bit of water (0.2 fluid ounces to be exact). That is the volume ...

Re: road toad oil injection

I'll have some information for this thread which attempts to illustrate the "smallness" of the oil volume which gets metered out by the oil pump in a while. It may help on the understanding of the amount of flow one should expect to see. Hope to be able to post tonight.

Re: 97 Ignition on a 95

Laurie: You seem to be using "PVL" as a generic identifier for electronic ignition systems, which would more properly be identified as "CDI" (Capacitor Discharge Ignition). This could be important because each manufacturer of "CDI" systems has its own design parameters....

See why I vowed to only ride vintage machines? (Except when an ISDT veteran makes me trade bikes for a while.) Vintage machines know to stay clear of things that reach out and grab you.

Re: 03 engine mods

My own personal preferences would suggest that it would be at least a slight affront to the Hodaka spirits to take the best, most civilized and all-round trail and trials cylinder of the various 125cc cylinders . . . and turn it into a fire breathing racer. If any choice is available to you, it woul...

Re: Wombat-- years made

I'm sure it wasn't manufactured in 1979 . . . but it was normal/common for small bore scooters to be titled/registered in the year of the original sale from the Dealer. So the paper work would show it as a 1979 if that was the year of the original sale from the Dealer, even if it was manufactured in...

Which Wombat are you asking about?

Model 94 & 94A (Chrome tank)?
or
Model 03 (painted tank)?

Re: 03 Wombat Fork Repair

Some time back, Bob Whitman and I put together a sheet on this topic -- we used a 24" long piece of black pipe (plumbing pipe) 5/8"ID by .840"OD and squeezed one end in a vise to create the tool to "capture" the flats on the top of the inner cylinder (damper rod). I've also ...

Re: Timing, electrical, or carb issue?

:D An additional "thought experiment" suggested two additional possibilities (given the new information) ;) 1. Changes in electrical flow resulting from changes in switch position cause a change in magnetic flux lines of force resulting in movement of the stator plate. (An intentionally co...

. . . and do NOT advance the throttle while attempting a cold start. Really. The "choke" is not really a choke. It is a kind of "mini-sized" starter carburetor circuit built into the carb which assures a properly rich mixture for cold starts with a two-stroke. And it is important...

Laurie: Have you discovered that a garden variety bottle of water will jam down between the bars of the luggage rack . . . so it is easy to have water with you? Extensive testing has shown that: A) you can have a bit of fun with the "go fast" riders on the MX start line on a hot day when y...

I saw a "signature" on some motorcycle touring site that has stuck with me. Something to the effect that, "You can go around the world on 12 HP. The rest is just wheel-spin." ;)

Re: Timing, electrical, or carb issue?

A "thought experiment" suggests that timing is certainly not the issue since changing the main switch position can't possibly change the timing. The same "thought experiment" also suggests that nothing you can do with the main switch will change the jetting, so the carb is not in...

If you let us know a bit about your engine, exhaust system and your home elevation AND the jetting specifications in the carb you have, we'll be able to give you an educated guess as to whether your carb is close or wayeeeee off from the jetting which might be "normal" for your situation. ...

"Blue Printing" the clutch greatly improves the smoothness of clutch engagement. You may have (or may not have) experienced the situation where - as you let the clutch lever out smoothly and slowly . . . nothing happens, and nothing happens, and nothing happens . . . and then suddenly - it...

Transmission and clutch are bathed in the same overall oil supply. I recommend modern motorcycle gear oils designed to work with wet clutches. Belray and Silkolene are fine choices.

Re: Leading axle forks

I don't think the question was about the merits of leading link (Earle's type) front ends. I think the question was about substituting 30mm leading axle forks into the Hodaka triple clamps -- which (as it turns out) is not a good idea at all. It could hurt you. Simply installing leading axle forks i...

Re: wombat carb

I don't remember the symptoms well . . . but it seems like transitions from pilot to slide to needle just didn't work well. A trials application would likely be the toughest test of those things. A rider would surely want clean, precise engine response as the throttle is opened when in sections.
